Bedford County pilot dies in crash

POSTED: November 10, 2009

CHANEYSVILLE - A Bedford County pilot is dead after an ultralight plane crash Monday, authorities said.

Helmut Karl Neubrand, 68, of Clearville was pronounced dead at the scene by Bedford County Coroner Sam Gordon, state police at Bedford said. Neubrand died from blunt force trauma to the chest.

The crash occurred about 4:15 p.m. when the plane apparently lost altitude and came down into trees on Ragged Mountain Road, Southampton Township, Bedford County Emergency Management Director Dave Cubbison said.

No pilot information was listed under Neubrand's name in the Federal Aviation Administration's Civil Aviation Registry. An attempt to contact an FAA spokesperson was unsuccessful late Monday.

Around the time of the crash, there were clear sky conditions, a light south wind and a temperature in the low 60s at the Altoona-Blair County Airport, according to the National Weather Service in State College.

Monday's crash was the first fatal plane crash in the region since the Sept. 1, 2007, ultralight crash that claimed the life of Fred C. Ebersole Jr., 70, of Duncansville. Ebersole crashed at the Blue Knob Airport near Newry.

Chaneysville Volunteer Fire Company firefighters and Raystown Ambulance Service also were called to the scene.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the FAA were notified.
