Former local man killed at Fort Hood
By Phil Ray, pray@altoonamirror.comMany members of the staff at the Federal Correctional Institution at Loretto on Monday were mourning the death of one of the victims of the Fort Hood rampage.
Maj. L. Eduardo Caraveo, 52, lived in the Hollidaysburg area but worked at Loretto for 3 years. Caraveo served as the chief psychologist at the prison from June 9, 1996, to Dec. 4, 1999, Loretto spokesman Jeff Trimbath said.
Trimbath worked with Caraveo, who had been at Fort Hood for only one day before allegedly being shot to death by Army Maj. Nidal M. Hasan.
"It's so unfortunate," Trimbath said. "All the staff members really got along with him."
Like Hasan, Caraveo had been ordered to go to Afghanistan to counsel with soldiers suffering from combat stress.
Caraveo, a native of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, came to the United States as a teenager and was a person who wanted to make something of himself, according to news reports.
He was a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and earned his doctorate from the University of Arizona in 1986.
Caraveo had a variety of jobs as a psychologist, working in schools as well as prisons.
"He was dedicated to his profession and was very well-liked," Trimbath said. "He is sadly missed and mourned by the Federal Bureau of Prisons."
Trimbath said that not long after leaving Loretto, Caraveo was assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons central office in Washington, where he developed methods to treat sex offenders.
Caraveo won the Norman A. Carlson Award for his contributions to the treatment of mentally ill inmates, Trimbath said.
Caraveo "did very, very well with inmates," he said.
Although Caraveo has not been at Loretto for a decade, many members of the staff still remembered him.
Caraveo is survived by his wife, Angela Rivera, who lives in Virginia, six children, and six siblings, according to the El Paso Times.
Caraveo was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Caraveo's son, Eduardo, a correctional officer in Arizona, called his father "a role model for me," according to the Washington Post.

Ads, That's the problem with what we have learned thus far. Questions were asked, red flags raised but nothing done. I agree, where do you draw the line? We know profiling does happen but where is the fine line between profiling and terrorism? This can NOT happen again, I pray for these families but I find it hard to believe there is not alot of anger in their hearts....

you know lambs I cannot really disagree with your "political correctness" comment. I too believe we have gone too far in trying to protect the rights of people who are so obvious in there meaning as this guy was. How do we correct that problem? How do we establish guidelines for how far is too far? Hoe do we know that the person is not American and is fully anti American? I ask these questions not tongue in cheek but in fact. How do we overcome those who would scream at the top of their lungs profiling or discrimination when confronted with truth? Facts of this case seem clear, he was a terrorist, anxious for the rest of the storey to reveal itself. Remember I am not asking in jest, I am sincere.

Bingo Charlie, if you did not vote for BO you are racist. If you would have called this man out from the first 'red flag' you would have been profiling. The Army, FBI, and Government have blood on their hands. Until this country can stop walking on egg shells these atrosities will continue. BO likes Muslims doesn't he?

Barry still believes it wasn't a terrorist act when we all know now this POS had been under investigation for quite some time. The media never had a problem with calling Tim McVeigh a murderer and pointing out his Catholicism. Why all of the sudden can't we say he happened to be a killer of a Muslim background. Bottom line is the Army dropped the ball on this one and innocent people were murdered in cold blood with political correctness leading the way. Sad.

you have no shame and being an veteran you lack of respect is as shameful as anything could be. you are a very sad person and your continued blasting of the President makes you less of an American in that you show a disrepectful tone constantly. Under these circumstances maybe, just maybe you should be investigated for your rhetoric??? Have a great veterans day and thank you for your service

BeeHO condemned the actions of a white police officer a lot faster than condeming one of his own, a muslim that went on a shooting spree killing our soldiers. Now he wants a full investigation before we make assumptions. Gee, perhaps another beer fest on the horizon?

Katrina was a freaking huricane, and a massive one at that. Katrina wouldn't have been an issue had the levees held. What I expect is fairness on both sides. Criticize Bush for not visiting N.O. - the people that did that need to criticize BeeHO as well. Whats fair is fair, right?

At least BO didn't pretend like nothing really happened like Bush did with Katrina. And this shooting just happened a few days ago...do you expect BO to just magically vaporize at Fort Hood right after the shooting happened? The base didn't need to worry about preparing for the arrival and the security of the President of the United States immediately following the shootings. They needed to take care of their comrades and their families at the moment. It's obvious that anything Obama does will never be enough for some of you. Ridiculous...you should be condemning the shooter not the President.

Thank you Rob, and I pray for all our servicemen and women. I am not a far left democrat. But faux and its followers need to kow the truth. They are infotainment as are the others that people choose to name. Real news requires digging and verifying those things said. I do that on a regular basis. I am tired of the disrespect we teach our children to show toward a President, any President. He or they are willing to put their life on the line with every appearance they make to serve this country and I believe we are ruining the respect that was taught to me by my father and probably yours.

I am a proud veteran of US Navy having served during the Vietnam era. I question your loyalty to this country when all you do is bash the President who in his way and with the approval of millions is trying to make us bettr and stronger. He may fail, but it will not be because he has not given his all in service to his country. Funny you blasing away at him not serving when he is the highest target on our enemies list of targets. Go to work enjoy your evening and think about this thing you attack. You are dead wrong and I know there is no convincing you and heaven knows you are entitled to your opinions

ADVOCATE--Yes I am a veteran, as were my father and my brother. My brother is a vietnam vet and nearly died. My status is not the issue. Mr. Obama is the one who knows nothing about being a veteran. And what branch were you in? I guess we should pat him on the back for not serving. Well, I would love to stay and spar with you somemore, but I have to go to work. Have a nice evening.

I just want to be like the GOP's on this web site..... It's Bush's fault. Afterall, He's only less than 100 miles from Fort Hood. Why wasn't he protecting the base? Typical Repub's letting there guard down. **Now back to reality. Maybe if we didn't attack IRAQ this would have never happened. Obviously bush's fault.

good call nospin. try paying attention to how military deployment decisions ar made and you might find this is the norm as opposed to "just this President" thing you try to make it. You might me well served to change your screen name to allspinhere. Even the attacks are completely wrong now, lies and insinuation, the faux noise channel direct to your home.

Really, I don't believe BO is in 100% support of our Military. The longer he waits to decide on additional deployments suggested by his own hand picked advisor the more our soldiers are put in danger. So personally had it been my family, he would be better to stay in Washington and continue to work on his healthcare deathplan.
