Election signals change
Election Day has come and gone, and changes are in store in Blair County and surrounding parts.
Altoona has passed the torch to Mayor-elect William E. Schirf, a Democrat who defeated Republican Jan D. Mills Sr. Both were vying to replace Mayor Wayne Hippo, who decided not to seek another term.
Schirf will join new council members David Butterbaugh, Jason Ibrahim and William Neugebauer, as well as incumbent Mark Geis, all of whom won Tuesday.
The city's financial challenges are balanced by an influx of business, fueled by Penn State Altoona, so it's an exciting time for a new regime.
In Cambria County, history was made with the election of the county's first woman judge. Linda Fleming gained one of two seats on the bench along with Patrick Kiniry.
There were shakeups in Blair County boroughs and school boards.
Hollidaysburg Area school board President Patrick Dandrea was the odd person out in a race that saw four newcomers - Brady Leahey, Stephanie Wertz, Wally Tomassetti and Joseph McDonald - elected.
Longtime Tyrone Borough Councilwoman Virgie Werner was defeated as Tyrone elected Courtney Rhoades, Christy Ray and Bill Latchford.
Political races are draining, and emotions can run high.
Now that the election is complete, those entering new positions will proceed with the enthusiasm that spurred them to run for office. It's important that they work together with those remaining on various councils and school boards, and it's important that those in the middle of their terms welcome the successful newcomers.
After all, the people have spoken.
We congratulate the winners as well as those who ran unsuccessfully. Their participation allows our system of government to work.

I think all of Altoona knows what needs to be done. The fact is tax abatements for any realestate in the City of Altoona is passed on to the all of the remaining properties. That said , now Mr. Weakland has for years been the mainreason our taxes are increased yearly, he just does not know how to manage a business which is what a city goverment is. The fact that he feels no need to document expenses with federal money , and his lack of ability to undrstand what a budget is for . I hope the new elected officials will replace this idiot, and yes he is just that! Also , Mark Gies has been allowing some companies to rape our city of millions of dollars by turning his head while they tear down tax base and build large scale commercial sites that pay very little in realestate taxes for extended periods od time , this right now amounts to 4.5 million in lost revenue to the city of altoona and the county of blair.

Republicans lost in New York, but it’s not a referendum. Republicans won in New Jersey and Virginia, and it’s a referendum. Go figure. I’m not complaining, though. The Republican Party tent is about as big as the eye of that needle Jesus talked about in Matthew. If Republicans keep this up, Democrats will win a lot of elections in 2010.

The elections in New Jersey and Virginia were indicative of nothing: two weak candidates got beat. Therein is the real lesson for the Democrats (and Republicans). If you have a lousy candidate that runs a lousy campaign, then they will lose regardless of the popularity (or unpopularity) of the President. The Republicans learned a lesson in New York’s 23rd Congressional District; though Faux News was eerily quiet about this (I’m sure they are blaming it on ACORN). A Democrat, Bill Owens, won the district for the first time since 1871 when Ulysses S. Grant was President. Real Republicans Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty trashed the faux Republican, Dede Scozzafava, because she was not Republican enough. Scozzafava’s unpardonable sin was being pro-choice, pro-same-sex marriage, and pro-stimulus. If you don’t hate gays, hate abortions, hate Obama, hate economic stimulus, and hate health care reform, then there is no room for you in the Republican Party. It’s extremism or bust. Rep

John---I didn't vote for Obama. When I say we, I mean as a majority of the people. Not me. I would have never voted for that guy. He is no commander in chief to me.

Our children already are screwed, and dead. Every day thanks to those false WMD's as four deferment Dick Cheney sent the kids off to die.

Mamma are you kidding me. YOU took a chance on Obama and you got what you asked for. A radical socialist with ties to the Black Panthers, AORORN and other anti-Americans and organizations. Hope you are enjoying the change because if things continue, our children are screwed.

Politicians are never going to change. Once they get in, they do what they want, not what the people want. Shuster, Geist, it doesn't matter. We are always willing to take a chance on new blood, like we did with Obama. Nothing changes.

Influx of business?? What color is the sky in your world. Hopefully, we can get Shuster and Geist out next and all of the new blood can get Altoona back on its feet.
