Polls quiet throughout Blair, Bedford County

From Mirror staff reports
POSTED: November 3, 2009

Election Day 2009 has been pretty quiet throughout Blair County.

Typically, voter turnout is low in the year following a presidential election, and that likely will be the case when the numbers come in tonight.

Terry Madonna, a professor and pollster at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, said he expected no more than one quarter of the state's nearly 8.5 million voters to cast a ballot in today's election.

Ingrid Healy-Tucker, director of elections, said no major problems were reported this morning.

"We had a pretty quiet start to the day. We've had some calls, voters are just trying to find out where they need to go to vote. We've had some questions about political signs, whether they are allowed," Healy-Tucker said.

In Altoona, voters are selecting a new mayor, and there are contested races for seats on city council.

Borough Council races are expected to attract voters in Tyrone, and seats on the Hollidaysburg Area School Board are expected to attract voters in that area.

The polls will remain open until 8 p.m.

Things are "very, very quiet" in Bedford County, Elections Director Peg Koenig said Tuesday afternoon.

"Things are going smoothly at the polls," Koenig said, adding that some precincts with municipal races taking place are experiencing good turnout while most are seeing few registered voters.

Sounds like somebody didn't make the team when he was a kid. The point is, you and others spread a ridiculous lie about the cost of the gym to get your people elected. Congratulations--it worked. Proud of yourself?

Okay Mallick, let's assume for a minute that the HAHS gym did cost 'only' 3 million dollars - even that is 3 million dollars too many!!

You know, maybe one reason people are so cynical about voting is because of lies like the one the "Leprechaun" posted below. The gym cost about $20 million less than he and the candidates he supported said it did--but they got elected with it.

Or maybe a candidate won't have to worry about if anybody votes at all in the future. All he/she would have to do is go kiss the backsides of extremely rich individuals for huge campaign contributions to "buy" the elections. That's pretty much what our Prez did, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

What is a real disgrace is that those who did not vote will be the first ones on forums such as this one complaining about how an elected official is doing his/her job.

Maybe there would be a better turnout if the promises were actually kept.

well excuse me for calling it a right, but "pass a test. Please tell me that is a joke?"

So true, Ads. A few hundred showed up at my polling place. A disgrace.

Voting is NOT a right, it's a privilege. I feel that there should be some sort of test that one needs to pass to earn the privilege to vote. Too many people get behind that booth and have no clue what they are doing, let alone who they are voting for.

How sad it is that people will log on to the web inlarge numbers to complain about their lot in life but will not exercise their right to have a voice in represents them. How many countries in the world would rejoice even to believe, falsely or rightfully, they have a voice. We are truly blessed to live here in this great country. Get out and vote!

Let's take the HASD Board away from the 'special interests' whose only concern is getting their spouses jobs in the district and hiring inferior teachers all the while spending our hard-earned money on a $23 million gymnasium that's sold out but twice a year!!
