TYRONE - Pete Dutrow may be from Hollidaysburg, but he bleeds black and orange and continues his winning record of public service.

"I've known Mr. Dutrow since the eighth grade as a science student, and since that time, through organizations like the Tyrone YMCA and Kiwanis, he and his family have always been dedicated to serving the community - Tyrone and northern Blair County," said Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller, who is past president of one of the many organizations through which Dutrow gives back.

Judge Miller pointed out that through Dutrow and his family's "Dick Dutrow Memorial Golf Tournament," the decade-old benefit honoring his late father, the Tyrone Kiwanis Club is able to fund a number of scholarships and programs that it otherwise couldn't take on.

"I put a lot of confidence and a lot of trust in him," said the Rev. Norman Huff, who has worked with Dutrow through the Methodist Church, YMCA, Food Bank, Kiwanis and most recently as a fellow school director for the Tyrone Area School District. "He's a hard worker, and he cares a lot about people."

The Rev. Huff called Dutrow "a gentlemen" who always lets people know where he stands.

"He let you know how he feels," said Huff, who added that Dutrow is like a brother to him. "But once he lets you know, then it's all right."

For 15 years, Dutrow's most visible role was that of Tyrone's athletic director. Before that, he coached wrestling after coming to Tyrone in 1964. Through it all, he taught science as he put down roots with his wife, Patty, to raise five children.

Since when is one required to be "perfect" in order to criticize others. We keep hearing these days that "if you're not perfect, then you have no right to criticize others". Who made that rule? People who don't accept criticism that's who. Note that those same people freely criticize others, but always ask you if you're perfect when you criticize someone. Just another way to avoid a debate, by shutting down the debate with red herrings and other fallacious thinking.

He was a rude SOB, plain and simple.

Mr Dutrow was from the Old School. Plain and simple. He was a strict disciplinarian. He was similar to the principle from Back to the Future. So if you were a "slacker" or spoiled you probably just saw him as mean. I respect Pete and what he has done for that town and the kids. His teaching style and hard nosed ways fell out of favor in recent years and thats a shame. You cant even so much as look at a kid wrong these days as a teacher.

One individual can make a statement. It takes an entire team of these kind of individuals to truely make a difference. It's funny how the mirror finally reports some 'good news' and all people can do is rip it apart like a pack of dogs. Maybe Mr. Dutrow was a jerk when he tought highschool. You've all stated that you are different people now and are living successful lives. Perhaps he is a different person also. Obviously he has made a positive impact that caught someones attention. Perhaps you're jealous and would like your 15 minutes of Mirror fame. If that is the case maybe you should have stayed here and made a difference in the local community. Maybe leaving worked for you, but it isn't always the answer.

Drillmama, I have plenty of faults, it would probably take more than the 1000 characters allowed to list them. I never claimed to be perfect. Are you? I see you on here criticizing people all the time.

Pennsylvania Gal, I wasn't "best buds" with any of the teachers during school. I went everyday, did what I was supposed to do, graduated and moved away. Unless you sat in my desk, (or others like me who were labeled losers and outcasts, made fun of every day, etc..) and experienced what school was like for those not in the "clique", you really have no clue. I have a successful life and career that I worked hard for. If you think Tyrone isn't about who you're related to, how much money you have or where your parents work you're sadly mistaken.

Well, i told you what the problem was, read the thread. Where the h#@l did you get the impression I am perfect? Please don't waste my time and answer this. I just gave my opinion. I call it as I saw it.

Abales---I don't have rose colored glasses on. I just don't understand what your problem is with the man since you are so perfect. Your entitled to your opinion. I was just wondering.

I do not care what anyone says about him. Mr Dutrow is a very nice man. He is what every teacher should be. He let you know what he expected of you and held you to it. The people who are crying on here about him being mean are the ones that enjoyed the teachers that were their "best buds" and let them do whatever they wanted. If more teachers were like him there would not be all of the ridiculous problems in the schools. Congrats Mr Dutrow, you let my a** have it a few times but I look back and truly appreciate it. By the way it is such a Tyrone thing to blame everything on not having the "right" last name or being in a particular sport. Excuses, Excuses.

DRILLMAMA...the point is teachers shouldn't treat kids differently. You obviously don't get the point. I have faults, never said I didn't. He was not pleasant to all kids, as a matter of fact he was just mean. Why put so much focus on one person, Tyrone needs to focus on a whole lot of other stuff. Like I said, Tyrone will never change, keep looking out of those rose colored glasses. LOL.

I guess there is fault in everyone. Whats your faults abales and Kelly?

I agree 100% with abales025. Helping your community is a great thing and more people should get out and try to help. However, I sat in this guy’s science class in the 9th grade and it wasn’t a very pleasant experience. If you weren’t an athlete or if you didn’t have the “right” last name, you were either ignored or treated poorly. Tyrone will never change, and I am glad I moved away eleven years ago.

It is relevant because it's nice for a change to read something positive about someone in the news. I don't know the man but he sounds like a truly giving human being.

Well, its great that he gives back to the community. But as always if you are not in the good ole boy click or crowd you will not be one that benefits from all of the "good things". Tyrone will never change. Mr. Dutrow was not noce to everyone when I was in school and I can't think of anything nice to say about him.

Kind od sad, that is how Tyrone is thats why I left as soon as I could. There is a world outside of Tyrone, and its wonderful.
