Who will be better NFL QB, PSU's Clark or former Nit Devlin?

Devlin projected as higher draft pick

Who will be a better NFL quarterback?
Daryll Clark Pat Devlin

Daryll Clark is 18-3 as a starter at Penn State and is beginning to generate interest as a Heisman Trophy candidate, yet the guy he beat out for the quarterback job, Pat Devlin, is considered a better NFL prospect.

It all goes hand in hand with what Joe Paterno has spoken of several times recently.

"I don't think Clark's gotten anywhere near the kind of credit he should have after the season he had last year and the kind of season he's having this year," JoePa said Tuesday.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg agrees with Paterno, suggesting in an online video blog this week that Clark deserves to be in the Heisman conversation.

"The more that I look at the numbers, and the more that I look at a race that really no one seems to want to take charge of, I think Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark deserves some serious consideration," Rittenberg said.

His reasoning had a lot to do with Clark's success playing with a revamped offensive line and new receiving corps.

Despite his college achievements - Clark is PSU's career touchdowns leader and likely will break Kerry Collins' single-season yardage record this year - he isn't getting much respect as an NFL prospect.

Clark is rated primarily as a sixth- or seventh-round pick in mock drafts for 2010. Devlin, who transferred from PSU to I-AA Delaware, is widely considered a fourth-round pick in 2011, with some even predicting as high as second round.

"I sort of think that Penn State let the wrong quarterback go," scout.com draft analyst Chris Steuber said. "I think they should have kept Pat Devlin and maybe, I don't know, have made him the starter instead of Daryll Clark. I think Devlin's a better quarterback prospect at this point."

Clark was asked Wednesday why he thinks he is being projected so low in the draft and said, "I honestly don't know."

He does, however, think about the draft from time to time.

"I'd be a fool if I told you I wasn't thinking about it," he said.

Clark knows he still has time to enhance his stock if he plays well, or that he could hurt it by playing poorly.

Just why is his stock so low?

"His arm strength is fine," Steuber said. "I think it's more mechanics. I think it's sitting in the pocket, having the confidence to make all the throws."

Playing at Penn State also hurts, Steuber said.

"That offense doesn't really allow you to see everything you want to see out of a quarterback," he noted. "It doesn't really showcase all his skills."

Clark beat out Devlin during the 2008 preseason, and Devlin served as the backup before transferring prior to the Rose Bowl.

"[Devlin is] more of a poised quarterback, he's better in the pocket, he has good mobility," Steuber said. "Clark has good mobility, as well, but Devlin just gives you the presence you want out of a quarterback.

"Devlin, to me, just has better arm strength, he has better awareness in the pocket, delivers the ball on time. More of a complete quarterback at this time. I think when you look at Devlin, you see upside. I think when you see Clark, you see a project."

Steuber predicted Clark will have a chance to showcase his skills at the NFL Combine and noted he may get that chance at the Senior Bowl, as well.

Regardless of pro potential, there's no denying Clark is enjoying a solid career. There's also no denying Penn State's coaches are trying to get the word out about him.

"Daryll Clark is as good as any quarterback in the nation," Jay Paterno posted Wednesday on his Twitter account.

Clark appreciates that the coaches "have their players' backs" in calling for more praise, but he added notoriety or lack thereof doesn't affect his performance in any way.

"That's not what I play for," Clark said. "If [the national media] feel that I should be mentioned, they're going to do it. If not, they're not going to do it. But that doesn't take away the fact that we still have football games to play, football games to win in order to be in a big bowl game.

"I go out to practice every day to be better as a football team in order for us to win football games, and that's really the only reason why I play."

Don't forget Tom Brady picked 199th in the 6th round.

And experts are never wrong. Well, except for that Ryan Leaf thing. And Vince Young. And Matt Leinart. And Alex Smith. And Jamarcus Russell. I could go on and on. But you're right Blogsniper, listen to an expert. Devlin MUST be better.

who is Nit Devlin?

gandulf, I don't think that is a fair statement about JayPa. Zach Mills was his first project. He was really good, until he got hurt. MRob was his 2nd qb. Well, I'd say for a guy who spent most of his time playing WR and RB, MRob developed pretty quickly into a qb as he led PSU to 11-1. Morelli, well there was always rumors that he couldn't read defenses. We knew it when we recruited him. That one went bad. Then, Daryll Clark, a 3 star prospect, made the ALL Big Ten Team. Best QB in the Big Ten. I'd say that's pretty good.

I think another thing to consider is how many of the PSU QBs were highly touted recruits? My guess is that it is much easier to get to and play in the NFL, regardless of coaching, when you have superior talent.

So long as Jay Paterno is handling the quarterback position, the individual at this position will never reach his full potential.

All this was part of my research from reading Quarterback U. Maybe I can get a job hosting a radio show.

you are changing the scope. I actually agree with the logic you discuss (I did read the Q U). BUT, the scope, as it relates to this discussion, is the actual question posed by the user. The actual question was "QBs sent to the NFL". Read, comprehend, and then formulate your reply.

While that may be true, neither of you took the time to read Corey's well written piece, Quarterback U. Here's a quick quote.... "Some people may include every quarterback who made it to the NFL as proof of a school's strong pipeline. But rather than boast about backups who rarely got off the bench, the better measure of success is the number of starters."

I think the question was "QBs sent to the NFL" and not "QBs that started an NFL game"

So I think Reason probably answered the question

All this was part of my wiki search from this morning. Maybe I can get a job with the Mirror.

Answering the question below: PSU has had two QBs start at least one game in NFL in the past 25 years -- Kerry Collins and Todd Blackledge. Lions have had six QBs start at least one game during the Super Bowl era, which began in 1966 (Kerry Collins 170, Todd Blackledge 29, Pete Liske 28, Milt Plum 12, Tom Sherman 7, John Hufnagel 1). By the way, Collins' 170 starts are the most for any Big Ten alum in the NFL during the Super Bowl era. All of this was part of my Quarterback U project from earlier this year: *******altoonamirror****/page/content.detail/id/521881.html?nav=5017

I'd like to know who the 5 QBs that PSU sent to the pros since Collins. I can't think of one who ever started at QB in NFL since 1994 except for Collins. It is indisputable that Jay Paterno does nothing to prepare QBs for NFL career.

Devlin should have stayed at Miami. He was a great pick up for PSU. But I knew that Jay couldn't handle a real QB and would ruin him. Given the situation, Pat made the right move to the coast.

Even great college quarterbacks don't always make good NFL quarterbacks. I don't see it from Clark (he's not the guy that seems to want to be the leader) and since Deleware is never on TV, it's hard for me to say either way about Devlin.

"1. How many QB's has Jay Paterno / Penn State sent to the NFL since Kerry Collins? "

answer: 5 since 94.

1. How many QB's has Jay Paterno / Penn State sent to the NFL since Kerry Collins?

2. Joe Flacco of the Ravens went to the NFL from Delaware.

3. Pryor !?!? What an over-rated joke. I don't believe his intelligence level can keep up with his raw athletic ability. That Forcier kid from Michigan has the best upside.

He will go right behind Tyrell Pryor...
