Johnstown puts a hurting on BG

Johnstown used its size, speed and depth to deliver an early knockout punch, besting Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic, 42-0, in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference matchup Friday night at Mansion Park.

The Trojans (5-3) got a big game from quarterback John Siciliano en route to a 35-0 halftime lead. Guilfoyle not only lost the game, but two starters, leading rusher Eugene Ehredt and receiver-defensive back Justin Bimle.

Ehredt got hurt early in the second quarter and was on crutches by the end of the game with an injured ankle. Bimle suffered a shoulder injury in the second half and did not return.

"They had too much speed. They were a much more athletic team than we were," BG coach Marty Georgiana said. "At times when we had them pinned in, they just broke us down and were able to make big plays and we knew that coming in. We just weren't able to contain them."

Johnstown, which did not punt on the night, scored the first four times it touched the ball and led 14-0 after one quarter. Siciliano scored on a 22-yard run, while teammate Dejour Morris, a lineman, lined up in the backfield in a goal-line situation and scored from 2 yards out.

Siciliano threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter, one from 19 yards to Richard Agurs and another from 10 yards out to Jordan Jefferson. LaQuinn Stephens-Howling added a 9-yard run for another score.

"I think the quarterback makes everything go, and he's good. He's the real deal," Georgiana said of Siciliano, who threw for 163 yards and rushed for 98. "I've watched him do that for a couple of years now."

Guilfoyle managed just 6 yards of offense in the game and had just 1 yard of offense at halftime. Trojan coach Kevin Marabito was happy to talk about his team's defensive effort.

"It has been strong all year,'' he said. "If you go back and look at our three losses, our offense put us in that position. Our defensive line was strong [tonight]."

Johnstown, with the mercy rule in effect, scored a touchdown on its first drive of the second half. On fourth-and-1, instead of punting, the Trojans went for it, and backup quarterback Gervon Simon scrambled his way to a 77-yard touchdown run to make it 42-0.

The Trojans had to pull Siciliano in the third when he was hurt on a scramble out of the backfield.

"He tweaked his ankle, but he walked off so we think he'll be fine," Marabito said.

Guilfoyle plays at Bishop Carroll next week. Carroll picked up its first win of the season Friday night, beating Cambria Heights, 32-13. Johnstown hosts Penn Cambria, which beat Somerset, 16-7, Friday night.
