Unbeaten Mustangs dominate Jays
By Anthony Rolish, For the MirrorJOHNSTOWN - The Portage Mustangs had little trouble keeping their unbeaten streak alive on Saturday afternoon as they dominated all phases of the game in a 53-0 WestPAC conference win at Conemaugh Valley.
Portage (7-0) used big plays on offense, defense and special teams to build an insurmountable 40-0 halftime lead over the winless Blue Jays (0-7).
"We're a veteran team," Mustang head coach Gary Gouse said. "We were able to execute and take advantage of some of their mistakes."
The Mustangs outgained the Blue Jays, 303-59, in total offense and extended Conemaugh Valley's scoreless streak to 19 consecutive quarters.
"We'd have to play a perfect game to beat them," said Blue Jay coach Jim Fisher, who is a former Mustang player and assistant coach. "They epitomize what high school football in this area is about."
Portage capitalized on a partially blocked punt on Conemaugh Valley's opening possession. The Mustangs got great field position at the Blue Jay 15, and Mike Sinosky scored the first of his two touchdowns on the initial play.
Sinosky added his second score on Portage's following series as he broke loose on a 55-yard touchdown sprint, and Tommy Burgan contributed yet another big play on the next drive as his 53-yard scoring run made it 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Ryan Scoran returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, and Jason Kostan followed that up with a 36-yard scoring run at the 3:28 mark.
The Mustang defense then put points on the board, as a desperation pass by the Blue Jays' Ron Kelley on the final play of the half was picked off by Zach Petrunak and returned 45 yards for a touchdown.
The subsequent mercy-rule running clock in the second half limited the amount of plays run, but the Portage backups were able to add to the Mustang lead.
"Some of the seniors that work really hard in practice all week were able to come in and take advantage of their opportunities," Gouse said. "That's something those kids will remember for a long time."
Senior wide receiver Corbin Corrente caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jake Bryja to close out the third quarter, and senior Brandon Bobolsky snared a partially blocked punt and returned it for a 35-yard score later in the fourth for the final points of the afternoon.
