Authorities: No form of foul play in deaths

Authorities have identified the two men found dead in a Hollidaysburg apartment last week.

James Samuel Kirk, 55, and Michael Ryan Mainhart, 60, were discovered Thursday in a first-floor apartment on Broad Street. Initially, authorities surmised that the men might have died days or even weeks apart, but Deputy Coroner Gil Barton clarified the time line Monday.

"They both died at about the same," Barton said, adding the pair were probably dead three to four days before they were discovered by police acting on a call from a concerned neighbor.

"There's no indication of foul play," Barton said. Suicide also was ruled out. What killed the two men - who according to authorities showed no signs of trauma - will likely take weeks or even months as the Blair County Coroner's Office awaits toxicology reports.

Both men recently had moved from the Hollidaysburg Veteran's Home.

Kirk, formerly of Tyrone, has a history of drug-related arrests, pleading no contest to a 2005 felony possession with intent to deliver charge and in another case that year pleading guilty to possession of marijuana.

Mainhart was from "eastern Pennsylvania," Barton said, but most recently had a Hollidaysburg address and in a 2000 driving under the influence case was listed as living in Harrisburg.

Hollidaysburg Police Chief Jeff Ketner said Thursday that investigators have learned more about the circumstances surrounding the men's deaths but said it would be premature to divulge further details at this time.
