ASO performs free concert

HOLLIDAYSBURG - The Altoona Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 81st season with its second annual free Labor Day concert at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at Canal Basin Park in Hollidaysburg.

The concert, titled "Our Music is for Everyone!," will feature a variety of classical and popular selections, including Copland's "Outdoor Overture," Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" and Mozart's "Eine kleine Nactmusik."

Directed by Theresa Chung, the concert was made possible by a $4,000 sponsorship from The Hollidaysburg Arts Council and additional gifts from the Hollidaysburg Women's Club and Lehman Engineers.

The rain location will be the Hollidaysburg Junior High School.

'Doubt' comes to Aloysius

CRESSON - The Pulitzer, Tony and Drama Desk award-winning play "Doubt: A Parable" will be performed by the English and Fine Arts Department at Mount Aloysius College at 8 p.m. Oct. 1 to 3 in Alumni Hall on the Mount campus.

WWE presents supershow

UNIVERSITY PARK - WWE's RAW, Smackdown and ECW will be making a rare, combined appearance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

PSU looks for Guitar Hero

UNIVERSITY PARK - The Center for the Performing Arts is staging a Guitar Hero Tournament at the Eisenhower Auditorium patio stage as part of the Come Curious Patio Party for University Park students. The contest is free and open only to Penn State students.

Contestants need to register for the tourney by Monday. Auditions will be held from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with the finals held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 9. The finals rain date is 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16.

'M*A*S*H' star in play

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will present the musical comedy "Church Basement Ladies" at 1 and 7 p.m. Sept. 26 and at 2 and 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Byham Theater.

The play features former "M*A*S*H" star William Christopher as Pastor E.L. Gunderson.

SAMA honors local artist

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona will feature the work of a gifted local artist in its latest exhibition, "Jory Albright: Mindful Travels."

More than 40 of the artist's pictorial narratives, depicting both fictional and non-fictional people and places, will be on view Sept. 11 through Jan. 9.

The museum will celebrate the opening of "Jory Albright: Mindful Travels" with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14, in conjunction with the museum's Blue Monday program. Admission is $20 per person. Call 946-4464 for reservations.

Digital artist gets exhibit

The Division of Arts and Humanities will begin the fall semester with an exhibition by digital media artist Jiawei Gong. The exhibition will run through Oct. 4 in the McLanahan gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts.

It is free and open to the public. There will be an artist reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Titelman Study.

Gong's works have been presented in 31 different exhibitions worldwide. He is an assistant professor of art at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

PSU film series starts soon

Penn State Altoona's free film series at the DeVorris Downtown Center will begin again on Sept. 13 at the building located at the corner of 12th Avenue and 15th Street in downtown Altoona.

The films will be shown at 7 p.m. each Sunday.

The series schedule includes: "The Boys from County Clare," Sept. 13; "A Shot in the Dark," Sept. 20; "Tell No One," Sept. 27; "Beau Geste," Oct. 4; "Whiskey Galore!," Oct. 11; "Let the Right One In," Oct. 25; "It's a Gift," Nov. 1; "Hobson's Choice," Oct. 8; and "Victor/Victoria," Nov. 15.
