City man dies after crash on Route 22

August 12, 2009
From Mirror staff reports

An Altoona man died Tuesday after being thrown from his car during an accident on Route 22 about 1.5 miles west of the Route 764 interchange.

Richard Caram, 70, died from trauma suffered in the crash after undergoing emergency surgery at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, state police at Hollidaysburg said.

Caram was driving east on Route 22 about 2:47 p.m. Tuesday when, for an unknown reason, his 2003 Toyota Celica left the road as it rounded a curve to the right.

The car traveled about 165 feet in the median before striking a drainage grate and a dirt mound around the grate, state police said.

The car flipped into the air and began to tumble, striking the ground three times as it rolled for about 180 feet, coming to rest facing south in the median.

Caram was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle at some point in the crash.

Duncansville Ambulance Service and the Canan Station Volunteer Fire Co. assisted at the scene.

The investigation is continuing, state police said.
