Turiano captures Sunnehanna title by edging champVictory earns berth in 2010 AmateurAugust 7, 2009 - From Mirror reportsFormer Hollidaysburg native Wes Turiano won Sunnehanna Country Club's medal play championship Sunday. Turiano, a 1998 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, played collegiate golf for the University of Richmond. The long-time member of Scotch Valley Country Club has played out of Sunnehanna the past several years after relocating to the Johnstown area. Turiano shot rounds of 70, 79 and 69 en route to his victory, finishing ahead of two-time defending champion John Zack. "On the last day, I was able to birdie 16 and finished with a couple of pars to stay ahead of John [Zack]," Turiano said. Turiano joins Zack, of Cresson, and Sean Brannan, of Hollidaysburg, as recent area natives who have won Sunnehanna's title. As club champion, Turiano has qualified to play in the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur, which will be held next year in early June. "I'm really looking forward to playing in the Amateur," Turiano said. "It's a real honor." PGA Sectional FARMINGTON-Hollidaysburg graduate Amanda Kehr captured the PGA Tri-State Sectional Player of the Year Championship held Wednesday afternoon at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Kehr, who will head off to Queens University in North Carolina in a few weeks, competed on the Mystic Rock course near Pittsburgh. She finished with a 69, including a 33 on the front nine. She totaled six birdies and one eagle, and was the only golfer to finish under par (72) in the 16-18 age group. The next closest score was 78. Scotch Valley HOLLIDAYSBURG - Michelle Day and Darlene Grove carded a 74 to win the championship flight gross division of the Ladies Tri-Counties Better Ball Tournament at Scotch Valley Country Club. Anita Joe Petrusky and Kate Conway (77) finished second, while Bev Ricketts and Sue Makosy (79) took third. Debbie Long and Connie Bolger won the net division with a 61. Patti Dodson and Deb Showalter (63) finished second, while Nancy Moore and Sylvia Schraff (64) took third. Barb Holtz and Bob Balorik won the gross division of the first flight with a 90. Shirley Wheland and Linda Derman (93) finished second, while Bonnie Carothers and Diane Stewart (95) took third. Mary Bock and Jean Kelly captured the net with a 61. Miriam Jacobs and Mary Ellen Nazit (64) finished second, while Ronna Lasser and Bonnie Robeson (65) placed third. Kim Marchi and Sue Haught won the gross division of the second flight with a 96. Diana Naugle and Louise Barner (102) took second, while Evey Monahan and Donna Mannino (106) placed third. Leah Geissinger and Sue Green won the net division with a 61. Linda Zorger and Gail Sheetz (67) finished second, while Louise Welsch and Doe Bolger (72) placed third. Park Hills Mike Raley carded a 72 to become the overall gross champion on the Park Hills Country Club's Senior Club Championship Saturday. In the 50-59 group, Steve Monahan won the gross with a 73, while Gary Burkholder took the net with a 67. In the 60-69 group, Don Brown took the gross with a 74, while John Nee won the net with a 65. In the 70 and over group, Hank VanVeenendaal carded a 90 to win the gross, while Jerry Allen carded a 69 to take the net. Jesse Auker and Lynn Grove shot a 68 to win the gross division in the Over 50 Under 50 event to beat defending champions Mike Raley and Todd Homan by a stroke Sunday. Dan Hileman and Tom Trimarco carded a 63 to win the net division. Tim Leach and Jerry Maringione (64) won a scorecard playoff to finish second. Rick Drabic carded a 65 to win the low net of the Senior Individual and Dogpatch Event Wednesday. Drabic was followed by Bob Means (67), Tom Foose (68) and Bob Lestochi (68). Kim Beyer and John Beyer won the Chapman Dogpatch event with an 80. They were followed by Helene Ackeret and Herb Bolger (82), Donna Mannino and Paul Smith (84) and Evelyn Monahan and Don McKnight (84). Sylvan Hills HOLLIDAYSBURG - Eleanore Trimarco had the least putts and longest putt on the third hole in the Sylvan Hills Golf Club's Ladies Golf Association Tuesday. Denise Madden had the longest putt on the fourth hole. Huntingdon HUNTINGDON - Geoff Clark carded a 39 won the low gross, while Bob Orr and John Hughes scored a 34 to take the low net of the Huntingdon Country Club's Big Orange Golf League. Hughes' 20-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole was the shot of the day. Hughes and Orr have teamed up to lead in the second cycle week four standings with a 3-1 record.
