Arthur A. "Art" Wyland, 95, McKee, died Wednesday morning at The Village at Morrisons Cove.
He was born in Martinsburg RD, son of the late Benjamin and Matilda (Carolus) Wyland. He married Ethel P. Woomer Dec. 11, 1937, in Altoona. Mrs. Wyland died Nov. 19, 2007.
Surviving are six daughters and three sons: Kay Biddle and husband, Bill, of Covington, Va., Janie Myers and husband, Don, of Roaring Spring, Matilda "Tick" Wyland and friend, Bill Over, of Roaring Spring, Sally Eicher and husband, Jim, of East Freedom, Polly Hoover and husband, Dale, of Roaring Spring, Joann Frederick and husband, Sam, of Martinsburg, Kenneth Wyland and wife, Yvonne, of Pine Bush, N.Y., Gary Wyland and friend, Carol Hammel, of Roaring Spring, and Jackie Wyland of East Freedom; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Nancy Shambaugh.
He was preceded in death by a son, Theodore "Ted," in 2004; and a grandson, Jimmy Smith, in 1973. He was the last surviving sibling of 14 children.
Art was a member of the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren. He retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 and was the founder of McKee Dental Clinic. He enjoyed working with stained glass, doing magic tricks and making candles, and he organized the McKee Miniature Square Dancers.
Art was a charter member of the Freedom/Greenfield Lions Club, a life member of the Roaring Spring Lions Club, a life member of the East Freedom Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Juniata Lodge 282, Hollidaysburg, the Jaffa Shrine and the Southern Blair County Joint School Authority.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, by Pastor David Banaszak. Interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Art's memory may be given to the McKee Playground, c/o Mr. Robert Taylor, 364 McDowell Road, East Freedom, PA 16637; or the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren.
