Juried exhibition opens today

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona has announced the return of its annual juried exhibition, "Artists in Our Midst."

The exhibition opens today and will be on display through Oct. 10, highlighting local and regional artists who are members of Art in Common, an organization based in Central Pennsylvania.

This mixed media work by Annette Zalanowski of Altoona, titled “Family Portrait,” is one of two works by the artist to have been accepted into the Carnegie Mus­eum of Art’s Associated Artists of Pitts­burgh 99th Annual Exhibi­tion. The exhibit will be on display Aug. 29 through Nov. 8.

Contemporary abstract painter Ned Wert will serve as exhibition juror. Wert works as an art professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and maintains a private studio in Brush Valley, where he lives.

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14. Admission is $20 per person. The evening also will serve as an opening reception for the exhibit "Jory Albright: Mindful Travels."

Pop rockers The Fray to play Jordan Center

UNIVERSITY PARK - Pop rock hitmakers The Fray will visit Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center, with special guests The Wheel, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12.

The Grammy-nominated band is best known for the hit songs "How to Save a Life"and "Over My Head (Cable Car)."

Tickets will be $37.50 for the general public and $20 for Penn State University Park students and go on sale at noon July 31. Tickets will be made available at the Bryce Jordan Center, Eisenhower Auditorium, Penn State Tickets Downtown, online at www.bjc.psu.edu or charge-by-phone at 865-5555.

Art Works to present Zillion Dollar Combo

JOHNSTOWN - Art Works will be hosting a night of live music by the band Zillion Dollar Combo at 7:30 p.m. July 31.

Bedford-based Zillion Dollar Combo plays a mix of '70s funk, soul, R&B, reggae and rock.

PCO to play Bedford

BEDFORD - The Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra will present a program featuring Handel's "Water Music," Bach's "Violin Concerto in A Minor" and Schubert's "Symphony No. 5" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the festival tent at Old Bedford Village. The concert is part of the Bedford Summer Music Festival.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased online at www.bedfordsummerfestival. org or at the Bedford Visitors Bureau and Fisher's Pharmacy in Bedford and at Everett Rexall Pharmacy, Everett. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Guthrie family takes State Theatre stage

STATE COLLEGE - Greenhouse Productions will present "Arlo Guthrie: The Guthrie Family Rises Again" at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at the State Theatre.

The tour features folk legend Guthrie performing music by his late father, Woody, and with his children and grandchildren.

Tickets are $33, $43 and $48 and can be purchased online at www.StateTickets. org, by calling 272-0606 or at the box office from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday or from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
