Richard E. Himes Sr., 73, Altoona, died unexpectedly Friday at home.

He was born in Altoona, son of William and Dorothy (Peters) Himes. He married Donna J. Sangenaro, and she preceded him in death Aug. 24, 1997.

Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Dohner and husband, Ted, of Clearfield; two sons: Michael and wife, Joanne, of Hanover, and Richard and wife, Nancy, of Tulsa, Okla.; six grandchildren: Anthony, Alexandra, Michael, Lauren, Kaitlyne and Rebecca; two stepgrandchildren: James and Heather; and two sisters: Virginia Church of Altoona and Helen Caldwell of East Freedom.

Richard was a graduate of Altoona High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired as a supervisor from North American Communications.

He was a member of the Frohsinn Singing Society, Unter Uns, Bavarian Aid Society and the VFW. He attended St. Mark Catholic Church, and he enjoyed history, watching the History Channel and spending time with his sisters and family.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Santella Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at St. Mark Catholic Church by the Rev. James B. Coveney. Committal at Calvary Cemetery.
