George A. Dorman Jr.

George A. Dorman Jr., 86, Altoona, died Thursday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, after a brief illness.
Mr. Dorman was born in Altoona, son of the late George A. and Alice (Barnes) Dorman Sr.
Surviving are six brothers: James and wife, Frances, of Forest, Va., Clair of San Diego, Calif., Richard and wife, Jean, of Englewood, Fla., Robert and wife, Carole, of Plainville, Conn., Gerald and wife, Janet, of Altoona and Donald and wife, June, of Southington, Conn; a sister, Alice and husband, Bill O'Donald, of Bellefonte; and a brother-in-law, Dan Walter, of Altoona. Mr. Dorman also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Dorman Walter and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Dorman.
Mr. Dorman was a 1940 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., for two years.
George served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a sergeant in WWII. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with six Bronze Stars.
He retired as a clerk and assistant landscaper at Adler's Landscape Nursery Inc., Altoona, with 10 years of service. He previously worked in the Accounting Department of WFBG and in construction for several years.
Mr. Dorman was a member of the William Penn Association, Branch 800, where he served as secretary; Nocturnal Adoration Society, serving as a reader and secretary; and previously NABF Junior Federation of Baseball, 8th Ward, as a coach and statistician. He also was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona, where he served as a faithful cantor.
George enjoyed singing and crossword puzzles and was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at Jones Funeral Home, 1222 13th Ave., where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona, with Father James Coveney officiating.
Committal rites will be at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
