Specter speaks to Blair Dems

Not too often does a concerned resident get to express her situation directly to someone who might make a difference. But that's exactly what uninsured Baby Boomer Holly Holdren got to do when U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter held a town hall meeting with area Democrats Wednesday evening.

"Holly, I think we're going to cover you," he said.

Specter received a standing ovation from a 100-plus crowd gathered in a meeting room at the Hampton Inn.

He is scheduled to meet Cambria County Democrats in Johnstown today.

Specter said a top priority is passing a health care initiative.

"Let's do it," he said. "Let's not have a filibuster."

Specter said he supports research and sees preventative care as the way to cutting health care costs.

A woman in the crowd thanked Specter for his support of medical research. She was wearing a pink, purple and red bracelet for breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and said she also supported Type I diabetes.

Specter has had his own battle with illness. He said he is feeling fine after chemotherapy treatments for his ongoing battle against Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer.

"We need some research funding," she said.

Specter said he is remaining in the political arena for just such matters.

He might also make a difference for the gay community.

"I don't think the issue of sexual preference is anybody's business," Specter said to a question about the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

He said the standard is due for a change, and if anybody understands change, it might be Specter who switched his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat in April.

He said he has voted his conscience and has sided with Democrats more often than Republicans.

"That is what a senator is supposed to do on the issues," he said.

He said more Republicans were suggesting the switch than Democrats.

"I feel very comfortable and proud to be," he said.

Blair County Democratic Party chairman Frank Rosenhoover said the town hall meeting was an opportunity for a face-to-face meeting and to let people know his reasons behind the switch.

"He wants the people to know he turned Democrat for very significant principle reasons," Rosenhoover said.

Rosenhoover said Specter brings experience, power and credibility to the party.

Jo Ann Nardelli said he looks at an issue from all sides and she appreciates his pro-union stance. She said she had met the senator before, and his knowledge of the state he represents made an impression on her.

"I also like the stability of him being in there that long," she said. "I'm definitely going to be supporting Sen. Specter."

allegheny: Palin isn't going anywhere now. Unfortunately - she caved in to the liberal slime machine. The jokes by so-called comedians and media types going after members of her family were un-called for. Do you think these same comedians will now do the same to BeeHO and his family - NO. Liberals hate a woman like her. Married, great looking, NRA member, hunts, fishes - can you picture rosie o'donnel or Katie Kouric living in Alaska hunting and fishing? NO. Liberal guys (yes, there are some) can't even relate to this woman! THATS WHY THEY HATE HER! And will stoop so low to attack her family members. Disgusting little souls they are!

gnsclfd, what a very unintelligent thing to say about George W. Bush. Did W. suggest to Bernie Madoff to go out and rip people off? Was it Bush's fault that those executives on Wall St. have been screwing the country for the past 50 years? Democrats have controlled congress for at least 50 of the last 65 years or so. When I look at this John Murtha's airport that no one uses I can't help but think democrats are just as guilty as R's for the mess we're in. When a person starts blaming one side of the ills of society watch out because they know nothing of what they speak of, they're just blind. People like Kennedy, Byrd, Specter, Craig, Pelosi, Boxer, Bunning and so many more of these elderly folks are ruining the country. And they come from both sides of aisle. Stop being so partisan and start blaming anyone that is screwing the country...plenty of blame to go around.

Oh sorry, but reading your post I beleived the socialist and demeaning words were an indication you thought she would be a better leader than our President. But if you were not talking about that......

I spoke nothing of Presidential qualifications nor presidential races.

For Independence Day I share from wikipedia, "[Thomas] Paine's great contribution was in initiating a public debate about independence, which had previously been rather muted."

In all US states, the governor is the chief executive of the state and runs the executive branch of the government. He is the commander-in-chief of the military and is responsible for managing the state budget.

Community organizers work with communities to promote democracy, civic engagement, the empowerment of local communities, and effect meaningful social change. The work of community organizers is not merely limited to grass-roots organizing efforts but includes community preservation and legislative advocacy.

allegheny: If part of the stand of the Republican party is that our President did not have the experience necessary to lead, it would be difficult to sell that Governor Palin is qualified for the top office or second in command. Now read carefully, I am not throwing stones at you, just asking a question that your party asks every day beginning before the election.

Let's start placing responsibility for the nations current poor economic conditions where it belongs - On the shoulders of George W. Bush! His poor leadership and decisions are why this country is in such bad shape today. If all you right-wingers will start placing the blame on your messiah Dubya, I'll give you this much. You can't blame Obama just 6 months in to his term for what was messed up over 8 years of GOP control. However, if things aren't turned around and moving in the right direction by next year at this time then - Yes, Obama is failing and changes need to be made in the 2010 mid term elections. But we are still under the MESS that Dubya and his band of merry idiots created.

Now the socialist democrat agenda of the "Messiah" Obama and far-left supporters are in for a challenge as Sarah Palin moves the national political stage full time. Get ready for some heated debates in the months to come. And Sarah Palin believes in the American values that the veterans of the "Greatest Generation" have fought and served to protect. God Bless America!

Arlen will really fit in nicely with the democrats. Couldn't help but catch Sean Hannity on Fox sending one of his newsmen out to do a story on John Murtha's airport....there wasn't anyone there or in the restaurant as the newsman ate lunch. And you voters on the left side of the aisle don't get upset by this? At least when Shuster was bringing pork home for local highway access it benefited everyone. An airport doesn't. I'm really ashamed of any politician be they a R or D that wastes money like this. As for Arlen I don't care what your politics are, if you think he's a shining beacon as our US Senator then vote for him again. If you think he's an opportunist...vote Toomey or Sestak. I prefer to see Arlen lose, preferably to Toomey but even if it's Sestak it's still an improvement. I despise opportunists.

Sfinkster is a dissapointment to Pennsylvania and America. He cares only about his own self and re-election. Nothing else. His track record proves it. It is time for him to go!

The Dems know they must push this socialism thru now, because the shellacking they and the moderate Republicans will take in 2010 is only 18 months away. Strike while the iron's hot Dems, then get ready to whine and complain about how the conservatives screwed everything up after 2010. It's the usual modus operandi for you clowns.

Did Spectre or the Mirror tell you that individuals who refuse to buy government health insurance will be fined $1000 and families who refuse will be fined $10,000 ? Didn't read that in this rag did you? All you read was sunshine and lollipops for a left wing Republican who jumped ship. The media are supposed to be watchdogs for the people, not lapdogs for the government. I suggest Amanda Kleiglights be nominated for whitewasher of the year, painting a happy face on this totalitarian takeover of our healthcare system, led by this despicable Spectre.

hey RidgeRunner, if our "party is the ever-shrinking minority, banished to the political wilderness for years to come", then why do you keep blaming us for all the problems you currently face? Not man enough to take responsibility for the unsustainable government spending you leftists set up? You liberals are very strange. First, you slap each other on the back and reassure each other that your firmly in power and the cons are "a sad minority" who are "toxic curiosities" who are "out of power, and will be for years to come". Then you do an about face and wheel out the Repubs and cons to conveniently blame for all the wasted money and worthless programs that you set up. That's a sign of vacuous self-absorption and immaturity, a common commodity among you joker liberals, who don't seem to take much of anything seriously, except your own hedonism.

Your economy is being "stimulated" by money they're borrowing for you. That's like taking money out of your right pocket, putting it in your left pocket, and congratulating yourself on your newfound fortune.

"Spending on taxpayer funded trips increases 10 fold under Democrats"....they're visiting Italy and the Galapagos on your dime taxpayers, buying jewelry and bling with your money. Then they come home and claim they're "concerned about your health and covering you with insurance" . You have to go to other news sources to get this factual informaion, you won't see it in this pathetic bird cage liner. Maybe someday you people will wake up, but you're still snoring loudly.

Do you remember who lead the fight in the U.S. Senate against HillaryCare? That's right, it was then GOP Senator Specter. Arlen's one and only core principle is: get re-elected. Thank God he switched parties. He is a weasel among weasels.

why do you thinkits is that you throw stones at someone who crosses back and forth between what a democrat believes and the republican belief system mocus. Don't you get it, I have said many times before that I am a centrist leaning left, you can't deal with that. You close minded perception about what contitutes a republican and a democrat keeps you from accepting anything that is not how you see it. I am anti abortion, pro life but do not believe government has a role. That doesn't change how I believe about abortion. I am not in favor of health care under the explanations that I have heard but I want to hear more. You attack because there are some important things that I steadfastly do not agree with republicans and yet there are things I don't agree with democrats as you can see. So then is it true that if I don't follow either party completely, lean left, and do not agree with you, I too am an idiot?

Ridge,

So that gives the media the right to BERATE and DEMEAN him? I'm not talking about criticisms of his policy, but you're not acknowledging the unfairly harsh treatment he received. It's patriotic to QUESTION an official, not to berate and demean.
