Curve's Alvarez leaves game with minor knee injury

Curve third baseman Pedro Alvarez left Sunday's game in the fourth inning after suffering a minor injury to his right knee on a foul popup. He is listed as day-to-day.

"He just had some irritation in the knee," team trainer Thomas Pribyl said.

It hasn't been decided, the trainer added, if Alvarez will miss any games.

"We'll re-evaluate it [today] when he comes in," Pribyl said.

Alvarez, the Pirates' No. 1 prospect, and catcher Steve Lerud gave chase to a popup in foul territory in the top of the third inning. The ball fell in between the two, and Lerud slid as he approached the third base dugout.

Alvarez jumped over Lerud's head to avoid a collision. He then walked slowly back to his position and was bent over for a couple of seconds, prompting a visit from Pribyl and manager Matt Walbeck.

Alvarez stayed in the game, and on the next pitch, Bowie's Ambiorix Concepcion hit a smash that the third baseman fielded and threw to first for the out.

Alvarez batted in the bottom of the third and drew a walk. He scored on Jonel Pacheco's home run but was clearly limping a bit as he rounded the bases, something Pribyl and Walbeck noticed.

Alvarez was replaced by Angel Gonzalez at third base when the Curve took the field in the fourth inning.

"It was more of precautionary thing, just with the wet surface, grass, humidity, everything," Pribyl said. "We didn't want it to get worse."

Alvarez went 0-for-1 with a strikeout and is batting .120 (3-for-25) in seven games with the Curve.

Isn't Pirates To Prospect kinda an oxymoron?

That makes for a good reason to take some time off from a game that he is struggling at when expectations of him are high.
