Bowden losing 14 wins
By Cory Giger, cgiger@altoonamirror.comJoe Paterno's lead over Bobby Bowden in the career wins race will get a big boost now that the NCAA has decided to uphold sanctions that will strip Florida State of 14 victories because of a massive cheating scandal.
Paterno's 383 wins at Penn State lead Bowden by one, but that margin will grow to 15, a seemingly insurmountable amount.
An NCAA report dated June 2 was released Thursday and revealed that Florida State's appeal of the sanctions has been denied. A total of 61 athletes spread across 10 sports cheated on an online music test between 2006-07, the report said.
All 10 teams will have to forfeit wins in which the affected players participated.
Florida State president T.K. Wetherell told The Associated Press that the NCAA's ruling is "just wrong" and added, "the rationale for [stripping the wins] isn't accurate."
Indiana State added
Penn State will open up the 2011 season against the worst Division I-AA program in the country when it hosts Indiana State on Sept. 3, 2011. The Tribune Star of Terre Haute, Ind., reported the game agreement Wednesday.
Indiana State has lost 26 consecutive games and is 1-50 going back to 2004.
The Terre Haute newspaper reported that ISU will receive a guarantee of $450,000 from Penn State for the game.
The week after the Indiana State game, Alabama will visit Beaver Stadium.
