Officials may cancel Tour de ’Toona

Sponsorship problems raise questions about ability to pay for event; decision coming soon

By William Kibler, bkibler@altoonamirror.com
POSTED: May 14, 2009

Sponsorship problems could force the organizers of the Tour de 'Toona to scratch the event this year.

"We haven't made our final decision," said promoter Rick Geist Wednesday. "We're still holding out on one big sponsor."

Raising money has been harder this year than ever for the event, which began in 1987, Geist said.

There are "an awful lot of good people still with us," but generally "sponsorship has just dried up," he said. "[Sponsorship] is the oxygen of bike racing."

He expects to know soon, he said, adding that the organizers have a deadline for obtaining sufficient sponsor commitments.

"We certainly don't want to put on an event where we can't pay the purses," Geist said.

Organizers had planned a four-day event this year, after reducing the tour from the usual seven days to one day last year, because of concerns about sponsorships, lawsuits, competing events and steering committee issues.

This year, the problems are all "external," and if the sponsorship problems take the air out, organizers will try again next year, Geist said.

Despite the shaky economy, "At this point, there's not an overwhelming concern about events being canceled or in trouble," USA Cycling organization spokesman Andy Lee said.

Only one other race on the 35-event National Racing Calendar has canceled so far - the Mount Hood Cycling Classic, said Andrea Smith, spokeswoman for USA Cycling, adding that she hopes Altoona doesn't follow suit.

Three other high-profile races among the 2,500 races sanctioned by the organization also have canceled - Tour de Georgia, the U.S. Open of Cycling and the Tour of New York, she said.

Laura Van Gilder of Cresco, who won last year's tour and various stages during more than a dozen years competing, said the race has been a big part of her life.

She was looking forward to coming here this summer when she passed her usual Interstate 80 exit on the way back from a trip this weekend, she said.

She worries that even a year's hiatus could end the race altogether, because coming back after breaking continuity seems to be difficult.

"That race creates a lot of special moments for bike racers," she said. "There's a little something for everyone."

The race protects riders and the volunteers and communities support them, she said.

"That doesn't happen with every race," she said.

"Ouch," said Team Tibco President and former tour champion Linda Jackson, who called it probably the biggest stage race for women in North America.

"It's near and close to my heart," she said.

Race Director Larry Bilotto had no comment.

"I need to get with Rick," he said. "I need to see where this rumor is coming from."

Next year's economy should be better, so organizers might be able to revive the race, if they lose it this year, said Byron DeShong, owner of Pedal Power in Altoona.

This all started under Bush you know. If Bush would have increased funding for bike races, this never would have happened. That Bush really ruined this race. I just hope Obama can fix this. Give him some more time.

Maybe you should make it more interesting by changing it to the "Tour de Tuna". Contestants could ride from one Subway to the next, sampling tuna subs and seeing who can get mercury poisoning the fastest. Maybe Chicken of the Sea could sponsor it. Until of course, somebody gets crippled when they slip on some Pepsi some Republican spilled on the floor. Then the whole she-bang will have to end.

So many closed-minded people who can't see past their nose. Why not enjoy something like this? Something that actually gives this area some credibility. This area needs something, and this was nice. What would make you people happy?

Klaus, I can see you have a a few opinions, I dont think a 1 or 7 day bike race qualifies as a major industry, it is entertainment and is a quality of life issue for those living in your area ( which I dont) It seems that the missed opportunity is not the money the contestants have but the potential for spectators to bring their money to spend in your area. Your race might be the only bike race in WESTERN PA that I know about..to loose it, which seems likely ( and according to the current online poll most likely NEVER to return ) is a loss to your city. No revenue, $0 nil, nada, nunca!!! Closed minded people only see how it effects themselves ( like the 1 week of traffic inconveniences) and not the big picture of what it COULD be if it were developed correctly. Again, go outside and see how exciting it is to watch your grass grow,,because that is all you have left.

KlausVR: What has the race done for Altoona? Well, ask yourself what has the New York City marathon or Boston marathon done for those cities? Evidently it does something since they keep having it, no? What does the Altoona Curve do for Altoona? It's people like you who want Altoona to turn into a ghost town.

weavej1: About 70% of the teams stay with host families. The rest stay in hotels, eat at local restaurants, buy gas at local gas stations, and hundreds of people fly into Pittsburgh International airport. Over 1,200 competitors and staff come to Toona that week.

amazed1 - So more money would be brought into the area with NO race? You make no sense.

Really, who frickin cares?

Closed minded? Exactly what has the Tour done for the area. Since it started, the area has lost almost a dozen major industries. I'm sure that is just a coincidence of the economy in this area ... but, what HAS the Tour done for us?

Who cares about the race anway? All it does is cause travel problems for the city and a good percent of the riders ride where they are not supposed to ride when they practice. It's about time. This Tour de 'Toona really doesn't bring in the money that they say. The bikers stay free with families in the area. The bikers are also on specific diets and bring their own food with them. They tie up the roads and delay people, making an impact on local businessnes who need to deliver. This is the best news I've gotten lately

Closed minded attitudes like this is exactly why you will always be a 5th class city!! Good luck watching grass grow!

"gimp scooters"?? What a piece of crop YOU are. Maybe you will be blessed someday to having to use one ... this remark will come back to haunt you. Mind you, I wouldn't wish that on you or anyone, but be careful how you slam the less fortunate.

This statement is not accurate. The following NRC races have been canceled:

Oregon Pro Cycling Event (aka Mt. Hood) Tour de Leelanau Priority Health Classic Ann Arbor Cycling Classic

As for the U.S. Pro Calendar races, still more races have been canceled:

Tour de New York Tour de Georgia U.S. Open (Providence, Rhode Island) Colorado Stage Race Reading Classic Allentown Classic

I am a little foggy, but wasn't it a few years ago the city wanted more money for the event? And did not get it? And shortly afterward the Tour went into a 50% split. Whereas 50% of the race was no longer held here? I also recall the Regatta, where the polititions forced that race out of town.

If the organizers can't keep this thing together this year, it will likely prove difficult to get it going again. If the racers find another venue on their calendar, it will be hard to get them back.

Once it's gone..it will be gone for good. The sponsors will find something else for their money..Maybe jobs for their communities.
