If the district seedings hold, the Altoona Area High School track and field team will be sending a large contingent of Mountain Lions to Shippensburg University next week to try to defend the school's PIAA boys team championship.
The Lions have top seeds in 11 of the 18 events - including Brady Gehret in three events and Chris Carper and Wade Endress in two events apiece - for the District 6 Class AAA championships, which will be held Thursday at Mansion Park, beginning at 4 p.m. The winners of each event will advance to the state meet, as will any competitors achieving a PIAA qualifying standard in their respective event.
The big question revolves around in which events Gehret will compete. A junior, Gehret earned top-seed honors individually in the 200-meter dash (21.7 seconds), long jump (22 feet, 11 inches) and triple jump (46-5). He also figures to be competing on the Lions' 400 and/or 1,600 relays - all three of Altoona's relay teams enter districts with the top time.
Lion coach Mike Adams said Gehret is entered in both relays and could be pulled from one of the individual events at the 6-AAA meet.
Endress will be on Altoona's 3,200 relay team and is the top seed in both the 800 and 1,600 runs. Carper is seeded first in both hurdle races and is part of the 1,600 relay.
In addition, Altoona's Ricky Diantoniis and Anthony Lytle are the favorites in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.
Hollidaysburg's Tyler Salyards is the No. 1 seed in the discus, while the Tigers' Jack Campbell is tops in the 400.
The Altoona girls notched four top seeds: Bethany Lender in the triple jump, Chelsea McClellan in the 100 hurdles, Lysa Mealing in the high jump and as a team in the 400 relay.
In the event of bad weather, the meet will be moved to Friday.
