Mock draft leads Steelers to Cal center

April 19, 2009
By Craig Andros,sports@altoonamirror.com

Here is my first-round NFL mock draft.

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford - QB/Georgia.

Comment: For a team starting from scratch, might as well start with a franchise QB.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith OT/Baylor

Comment: Smith has a better pro ceiling than Monroe and he is the best in a deep class of OTs.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry LB/ Wake Forest

Comment: GM Scott Pioli took care of the offense with the signing of Matt Cassel.

4. Seattle Seahawks: Eugene Monroe OT/Virginia

Comment: LT Walter Jones had microfracture surgery at 35. Monroe is athletic and can play either side.

5. Cleveland Browns: Michael Crabtree WR/Texas Tech

Comment: The Browns go with the best WR in the draft.

6. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Smith OT/Alabama

Comment: Despite his pre-draft antics, Smith could end up being the steal of the draft.

7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin WR/Missouri

Comment: Even Al Davis knows getting Jamarcus Russell a threat is a must.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Mark Sanchez QB/USC

Comment: Does this mean he is in the Jags' camp in July? Maybe, but the 49ers, Jets or Broncos may trade up to snatch the former Trojan.

9. Green Bay Packers: Brian Orakpo DE/Texas

Comment: The Bronco Nagurski Trophy winner can easily make the switch to OLB in Green Bay's new 3-4 scheme.

10. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Maybin DE/Penn State

Comment: Maybin was impressive in his Pro Day workout, showing up at 253 pounds and running 4.59 in the 40.

11. Buffalo Bills: Everette Brown DE/Florida State

Comment: The rush for DEs is on. The Bills get a versatile athlete with great pass rush moves.

12. Denver Broncos: B.J. Raji DT/Boston College

Comment: This guy could have gone higher if it weren't for a failed drug test.

13. Washington Redskins: Michael Oher OT/Mississippi

Comment: Oher can start at RT before eventually replacing Chris Samuels at LT.

14. New Orleans Saints: Malcolm Jenkins CB/Ohio St.

Comment: Upgrade 23rd rated pass defense or replace Deuce McAllister? Jenkins is the best corner in the draft.

15. Houston Texans: Vontae Davis CB/Illinois

Comment: Recent LB signings allow Texans to fix secondary woes.

16. San Diego Chargers: Tyson Jackson DE/LSU

Comment: Bolts bolster pass rush with Merriman returning.

17. New York Jets: Chris "Beanie" Wells RB/Ohio State

Comment: J-E-T-S Jets-Jets-Jets can't pass up heir apparent to Thomas Jones.

18. Denver Broncos: Ray Maualuga LB USC

Comment: Two defensive picks in Round 1.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman QB/Kansas St.

Comment: Leftwich+ McCown+Griese = We need help!

20. Detroit Lions: Robert Ayers DE/Tennessee

Comment: Lions switch to D with second selection.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Knowshon Moreno RB/Georgia

Comment: Have you seen the films on this guy? Who cares if he ran a 4.6?

22. Minnesota Vikings: Darrius Heyward-Bey WR/Maryland

Comment: Fastest player in the draft.

23. New England: Clay Mathews LB/USC

Comment: Second Trojan LB in first round.

24. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Pettigrew TE/Oklahoma State

Comment: Clear choice as top TE in draft.

25. Miami Dolphins: Brian Cushing LB/USC

Comment: Trifecta completed.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Kenny Britt WR/Rutgers

Comment: A solid weapon for Joe Flacco.

27. Indianapolis Colts: Peria Jerry DT/Mississippi

Comment: Colts still having nightmares of Darin Sproles.

28. Philadelphia Eagles: Eben Britton OT/Arizona

Comment: Can play multiple positions up front.

29. New York Giants: James Laurinaitis LB/Ohio State

Comment: Assuming Braylon Edwards is already in the Big Apple.

30. Tennessee: Darius Butler CB/Connecticut

Comment: Corner help needed as Nick Harper is 34 years old.

31. Arizona Cardinals: Donald Brown RB/Connecticut

Comment: Two Huskies in row.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Mack C/California

Comment: Mack is a beast who can also play guard.
