Altoona wins title

MECHANICSBURG - Brady Gehret won two individual events, was on two winning relays and set two meet records Saturday as Altoona Area High School edged State College for boys team title at the Bruce Dallas Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.

The Altoona girls, getting a gold-medal performance from Bethany Lender, finished fourth out of 23 teams. That made Altoona the first school other than the host school, Cumberland Valley, to win the overall championship in the event's nine-year history.

The Mountain Lions finished with 92 points, while State College had 85. Cumberland Valley and Camp Hill Trinity wound up tied for third on the boys side with 63.

"We were not at full strength today because of illness,'' Altoona coach Mike Adams said. "We had to leave a few guys at home.''

It didn't show, as the Lions garnered eight top-three finishes, including five firsts. Gehret led the way by setting a meet record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.33 seconds and joining Mike Treese, DeRon Lee and Aaron Nadolsky to post a 3:22.49 time in the 1,600 relay. That was a meet record by five seconds.

Gehret also won the long jump with a best effort of 22 feet, 7 inches and teamed with Treese, Nadolsky and D.J. Greene for a winning 43.5 time in the 400 relay.

Anthony Lytle high jumped 6-0 to account for the Lions' other gold. He was also third in the triple jump (43-4) and fifth in the long jump (20-3), while Nadolsky claimed second in the 200 (22.57) and fourth in the 100 (11.45).

Wade Endress ran a 9:50.09 to take second in the 3,200 run. He also earned a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 relay, where he anchored the team of Jordan Liberman, Ryan Trexler and Chris Fischer to a time of 8:32.26.

Fischer, Lee and Liberman earned individual medals, too. Lee was fourth in the triple jump at 41-10, Fischer fifth in the 3,200 at 10:19.94 and Liberman fifth in the mile at 4:35.82.

Ricky Diantoniis and Chris Krepich rounded out the Lions' medalists with sixth-place showings in the pole vault (12-0) and high jump (5-10), respectively.

On the girls side, Lender posted a result of 37-6 to win the triple jump.

Earning second-place honors were Nikki Kerns in the high jump (5-0), and the 400 relay team of Kelly Davis, Lysa Mealing, Breonna Morris and Lender, who placed second in 51.35 seconds.

Finishing third were Davis in the 100 (13.32), Mealing in the long jump (16-10), Casey Murtagh in the high jump (5-0), and the 1600 relay team of Morris, Davis, Mealing and Lender (4:18.36).

Mealing took fourth in the triple jump (35-2), as did Mackenzie Wilt in the discus (92-3). Lender placed fifth in the long jump (16-7), as did Samantha Strayer in the pole vault (9-6). Alexis Ebersole was sixth in the 800 (2:32.43).
