HOUTZDALE - Ten corrections officers at the State Correctional Institution at Houtzdale were injured Thursday night in a fight that began when an inmate assaulted an officer, prison officials said Friday.
"No weapons were involved, and at no time was there a danger to the public," according to a statement issued by the prison and Superintendent Randall Britton.
Eight officers were sent to an unidentified hospital for treatment, while two others were treated at the prison infirmary, officials said. No inmates were reported injured.
Prison officials said the fight started about 5:50 p.m. in the inmate dining hall during the evening meal.
After the inmate assaulted the officer, staff immediately responded, and when they tried to subdue the inmate, additional inmates responded, then additional staff responded.
The situation was brought under control in about 10 minutes, according to Britton's statement.
It was contained to the dining hall and the outside walkway area.
State police were notified of the incident and are conducting an investigation.
The inmates involved are being held in the prison's restricted housing area.
Those charged will face court arraignments and will be transferred to other institutions, prison officials said.
