Joseph Eugene "Gene" Adams, 75, Altoona, died Monday afternoon at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late John R. and Ethel Mary (Elder) Adams. He married Betty Jane DelRicco Aug. 20, 1955, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona. She died April 9, 1994.
Surviving are two sons: Dean Joseph (Elaine) Adams of Duncansville and John James (Anne) Adams of Altoona; a daughter, Gail Anne (Hal) Badorrek of Altoona; six grandchildren: Kimberly Badorrek, Katelyn Adams, Carolyn Adams, Angelyn Adams, Adam Badorrek and Jason Adams; four brothers: Richard Thomas Adams of Altoona, John C. Adams of Farmington, N.H., Donald Paul Adams of Reno, Nev., and Kenneth Edward Adams of Rochester, Minn.; and three sisters: Marie Agnes McKenna of Centennial, Colo., Sister Rita Adams, Order of Divine Providence, of Assumption Convent, Pittsburgh, and Mary Lou Adams of Centennial, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. Adams.
He retired in 1997 after 18 years of service as Logan Township engineering coordinator and zoning administrator, where he served from 1979-97. He also served as Logan Township manager for one year. He previously was assistant city engineer for the City of Altoona for 22 years.
Gene was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona, where he served as an usher for more than 45 years.
Mr. Adams attended Altoona Catholic High School and two years at Penn State Altoona Campus. After graduation, he became a certified surveyor in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Blair County Planning Commission, Altoona Zoning Board and Altoona City Planning Commission.
Gene enjoyed watching his grandchildren play baseball, and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War aboard the destroyer USS Saufley.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church with Father D. Timothy Grimme officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
