Altoona Area Public Library has announced its activities for October.
* The Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library are holding their annual pecan sale. Supporters can choose from three flavors, wrapped in a foil gift bag and ready to use for holiday gifts, for $6. A one-pound bag of pecan halves and pieces for holiday baking also is $6. Orders must be placed by Oct. 17 by calling 946-0417. All sales benefit the library.
* The library will celebrate Teen Read Week Monday through Oct. 18. Discover "Books With Bite at Your Library' in the Young Adult section, featuring more than 3,600 books. During your library visit, take a moment to view the entrance display case designed by Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center students Marchessa Smith, Stephen Consalvo and Amber Eden.

* The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25, noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 27. Great bargains will be offered on hardcover and paperback books, DVDs, CDs, videos, records and audio books. Oct. 27 is $5-a-Bag Day.
* The library will be filled with music from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 16. The day will include great reads, three art exhibits and the music of harpist Robert Myers.
* The Blair County/Penn State Master Gardeners and the library will present "Iris' with master gardeners Bernice Cellini and Jerry Kay at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the library theater. Cellini and Kay will introduce participants to many species of iris, plus growing and care tips.
Children's events
The library will begin enrolling children ages 18 months to 3 years old for Toddler Time on Monday. Children and families will enjoy stories, songs and rhymes. Classes are held at 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. To register for the free program, call 946-0417, ext. 123, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

* Kindergarten Explorers is a program designed to introduce children to the routine, materials, activities and literacy experiences they will have in a traditional kindergarten classroom.
Kindergarten Explorers will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday and Oct. 31 at the library. The program is free and is supported by the United Way of Blair County. To register, call 946-0417, ext. 123.
* Celebrate Italian Heritage at the Altoona Area Public Library at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday. The program is open for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
