Pickup knocks deer into jogger’s path

From Mirror staff reports
POSTED: October 10, 2008

An Altoona RD 1 man was hurt Thursday morning when struck by a deer that was hit by a pickup truck.

The chain-reaction accident happened just before 9 a.m. on Grandview Road north of Ponderosa Drive, Logan Township Police Chief Ron Heller said Thursday.

Donald Hippo, 66, was treated at the scene for a cut on his head and taken to Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, for additional treatment.

Regis Watt of 1425 17th Ave. was driving north on Grandview Road when a deer jumped in front of his pickup truck. Watt's truck struck the deer and knocked it into Hippo, who was jogging.

"The deer hit Hippo from behind, on his legs ... causing him to fall on the berm. He struck his head and had a pretty bad cut," Heller said.

The deer died in the accident.

Silly suicidal deer are always trying this kind of stuff along the highways. Anything to get a mention in the Mirror...

Well, Pa hunters, there you have it... The last official deer in the Pennsylvania woods was wiped out on Grand View Road. Might as well go into the woods and get your tree stands because there are none left.
