Paterno kicks one player off team, suspends three

UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State will be without three key players for Saturday's game with Oregon State.

Joe Paterno confirmed on his radio show Thursday night that starting defensive linemen Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma, along with tight end Andrew Quarless, will not play for disciplinary reasons.

The action comes in the wake of a university police investigation Tuesday in which a small amount of marijuana was taken from the apartment occupied by the aforementioned three plus cornerback and kick returner A.J. Wallace.

Charges have yet to be filed, but university police have said they would be.

Paterno said "Wallace was not part of it," but he has not allowed Evans, Komora or Quarless to practice with the team.

"It's unfortunate," he said. "But if they did something as dumb as it appears they did and I'm not sure if they did or didn't even being close to that kind of thing, I'm not going to play any one of those kids this week."

He said he's not sure how or when the matter will be resolved.

"I feel they have a responsibility to the program, their families and their teammates," he said.

Backup defensive back Willie Harriott, also a special teams player, "got in a jam," Paterno said, has been removed from the team. Harriott's troubles do not appear related to the marijuana incident.

Evans, one of the top defensive ends in the Big Ten and the Lions' sack leader last year, will likely be replaced by Aaron Maybin. Koroma will be replaced by Jared Odrick.

Quarless, who has been in and out of trouble for the past couple of years including an arrest for DUI in the spring, has been backing up starter Mickey Shuler, Quarless' playing time now will likely go to redshirt freshman Andrew Szczerba.

Typical Paterdo. Kick the back up off the team. It's a wonder he did not find some walk on practice squad kid to kick off. These kids are not paying to go to school, they all got a free ride and up in smoke it goes.

This attitude that "everybody does it" so let's let it go and move on is simply ridiculous. Let's put this into a different perspective. Why are parents paying 40 thousand dollars to send their kids to college to use drugs and alcohol ? Why are we paying federal & state tax dollars to fund grants that send these kids to college? Their are still kids out there that cannot afford to go to college and the grants do not cover their cost of living but they are straight A students that would not waste their time with drinking or drugs. You know we have drug busts in this area and people who are "just caught with pot" go to jail. Pot is illegal, drugs are illegal in this country. Drinking when you are under 21 is illegal in this state yet we always find a reason to make it acceptable. We even make rape acceptable if the student who did it is a football player and we can say the girl had a short skirt on or "she asked for it" or Oh they are just boys and

Shows how much you know sayhigh, the players are required to sign contracts stating that they maintain a certain GPA and obey conduct rules with integrity that will do nothing to harm or tarnish their reputation, the team and the university. Stop using and you might have a few brain cells left.

What happened to privacy? What goes on in the player's apartments isn't JoePa's buisness. That old **** was prob just mad he was not getting high. To bad they did not do other drugs...like alcohol....what a load.

Oh I'm sure it did, and there has always been tons of sweeping things under the rug. I think with the internet age it's a little harder b/c there's always a way of finding things out.

They should all be kicked off, who cares if we have a few losing seasons, that can always been turned around. It would be worth it instead of having Penn State's name dragged through the mud because of these idiots who don't appriciate how good they have it. Give their scholarship monies to the kid that's working two and three jobs to put himself through school.

The big difference between now and 20 or 30 years ago, is that a lot of players currently come from backgrounds that instill a "I don't care." attitude, and disrespect for elders. They are thinking "JoePa is 80-plus years old! He can't keep up to date with us! He's old and stupid, and has no idea what's going on and how to stop us."

You're right Janem, if these guys want the pro careers, then straighten up. Don't put yourself in the position to lose it all. I think Paterno lets them get away with too much. In the last 3-4 years how many times have players been at the epicenter of one case or another, whether it be for fighting, drugs, or partying? You wouldn't have seen that 20-30 years ago.

He may be old but he is fairly smart. He is making the right choices. If you do something wrong, then accept the consequences. If you are given an opportunity so great and you screw that up then it is your problem.

I'm tired of seeing players being suspended for being accused for something. Accused is not guilty. Nothing has been decided yet. Austin Scott had a possible pro career lost, because of a wacko woman he was involved with. If he still could have played football while his trial was pending(found not guilty), he possibly could have been in pro football now!
