Gunman at station identified

The Asociated Press
POSTED: July 27, 2008

STATE COLLEGE - The ex-wife of a gunman fatally shot by police outside a central Pennsylvania radio station says the man struggled with bipolar disorder.

Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers identified the gunman as Brian Neiman, 50, of Pottersdale.

Neiman was killed Friday after he fired at officers and tried to run them over with his vehicle outside WTLR.

Jean Neiman of Mifflin County says her ex-husband could turn angry when he didn't take his medication. She says they frequently listened to the Christian station together before divorcing in 2006.

There is something to keep in mind. When mental illness does strike, it does not announce itself and sometimes it is very indiscriminant about who is affected and when. Sit back and think on this for a moment. One in five people (established statistic) is affected by mental illness. This does not include family members, care givers or friends. Pretty heavy duty odds, don't "you all" think?

I am glad the police put this idiot out of his misery. One less psycho on the street.

Thank God we are not saddled with the cost of a lengthy court case based on NOT MENTALLY CAPABLE! These bipolar excuses are becoming as rampant as bad weeds. Sorry Patience but if some nut job is released and dependent on taking self medication; I think we are better to return to the days of asylums where just like criminals they are locked up to protect US!

Yeah.... lets get as many people as we can addicted to so-called mind stabilizing drugs. Has anybody noticed that years ago, before you saw all these different drugs being prescribed to so many people, you didn't hear about school shootings, mall shootings, murder-suicides, and women drowning their children like you do now. There are WAY too many people out there wacked out of their minds on these pharmaceutical drugs that get pushed on them by some doctor getting kickbacks from the drug manufacturers.

For many people who suffer from mental illness, taking their medication as prescribed becomes a burdensome chore and they often they do not want to experience life through flat affect. Sometimes medication is stopped abruptly (which is dangerous) by patients because of associated side effects. Some bipolar individuals actually become addicted to their highs. Bipolar disorder is treatable and more common than many people realize. Anger, anxiety and irritability can be evidenced in both the manic and depressive modalities. Typically, there is a genetic component associated with bipolar disorder. With proper diagnosis and regular psychopharmacologic intervention, individuals with this disease can live reasonably normal and productive lives. In this case, the outcome, unfortunately, was a tragic one. If you or someone you know exhibits the signs and symptoms of mental illness, encourage them to seek treatment which may include the use of medication in conjunction with interactive
