On the air: A quick look at some area radio and television personalities

Caleb James, MIX 94.7, Altoona

May 16, 2008
The Altoona Mirror
Age: 45

Current position: Morning DJ on MIX 94.7

Family: Wife Wendy and four children: Brandon, Hannah, Madison and Nathan

Hometown: DuBois

High school: DuBois Area High School, class of 1981

College: Clarion University, bachelor’s degree in communication, 1984

My first job in radio: WHTX, Hit Radio 96 in Pittsburgh on weekends

How I landed in my present job: I was out of radio for almost 10 years when Dave Barger put this new MIX station on the air. I just called him and told him I wanted to wear the headphones again.

My earliest influences in radio were: Scott Paulsen, who I worked with at WHTX, and Rick Dees.

The most interesting person I ever interviewed was: I would have to say Captain Kangaroo. I suggested that he and Mr. Green Jeans had a falling out, and it was the captain’s fault. He got very ‘‘uncaptainlike’’ and almost ended the interview! It was very funny.

What I like best about my job: To be able to impact peoples lives every day with something heartwarming, funny, sad ... the list goes on.

What I dislike most about my job: The 3 a.m. alarm.

How the radio business has changed: Deregulation in the radio industry has been very bad for air talent. There are fewer opportunities.

Advice I could give to someone interested in making radio a career: You must be passionate. If you hang in there, someday a complete stranger will walk up to you and talk to you like you are a good friend. They will tell about something you did or said that made them laugh or cry, and in an instant, you will realize it is all worth it.
