Pa. bike race tour to stop in Bedford

By Wendy McCardle, wmccardle@altoonamirror.com
POSTED: May 7, 2008

BEDFORD — Up-and-coming bicycle racers representing 15 countries will stop in Bedford for a Finish Line Festival as part of the American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania in late June.

Two of the largest stages of the 450-mile race either finish or start in Bedford, said Frankie Andreu, former Olympic cyclist and nine-time Tour de France rider. Camp Hill to Bedford is the longest of the six stages, while Bedford to Latrobe is a ‘‘very active one.’’

Andreu will bring the California Z-Team he manages to the Tour of Pennsylvania. He said the race only being open to those between 18 and 24 years old allows rising stars to compete against other riders of similar ability and age, as opposed to established professionals.

The Bedford festival, which will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. June 26 at Fort Bedford Park, falls about midway through the six-stage competition. The race and accompanying festivals, presented by Highmark Healthy High 5, will begin June 24 in Philadelphia and end June 29 in Pittsburgh as part of Pittsburgh 250, a yearlong celebration of the naming of Pittsburgh.

‘‘For any team coming to Pa., this is our No. 1 goal for the year,’’ Andreu said.

Andreu also said the race is important for riders because media will be reporting the results worldwide.

Locals can participate by attending the festival and cheering on the cyclists. Fans should claim a spot early because many roads will be closed to accommodate participants.
