Authorities probe assault on unborn child

By Amanda Clegg, aclegg@altoonamirror.com
POSTED: April 15, 2008
WILLIAMSBURG — State police are investigating an assault on an unborn child after a pregnant teenage girl allegedly was slipped a cow hormone intended to abort the fetus.

State police at Hollidaysburg and Williamsburg police are investigating an allegation that known suspects put ProstaMate in the 17-year-old’s drink.

Police said ProstaMate is a liquid farmers use to bring cows into heat or to abort a calf.

“At this point in the investigation, [it] is believed that the suspects’ intentions were to abort the unborn child of the victim,” police said.

State police said known suspects stole a bottle of ProstaMate and a syringe from Donald Eastep of Huston Township between March 23 and 30. The suspects were not charged as of Monday.

A phone call to Eastep was not immediately returned.

The girl was given a bottle of Gatorade allegedly containing the substance March 31 at Williamsburg Community High School.

The victim’s mother said Williamsburg police collected the Gatorade bottle, and her daughter’s blood was sent to the crime lab for analysis.

The mother, who initially did not know her daughter was pregnant, said she does not know how much of the substance was in the drink.

The mother’s name is being withheld to protect the identity of the juvenile.

She said her daughter took the last sip of Gatorade at 2 p.m.

The mother said her daughter was alerted about the drink at 5:30 p.m. by a friend. The mother said her daughter’s boyfriend slipped the substance into the drink.

She said they called 911 and went by ambulance to Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, the evening of March 31.

She said hospital doctors could not find any conclusive evidence of what effect the substance might have on the girl or the fetus. She said doctors told her because the substance is a hormone, it wouldn’t hurt the girl but could abort the fetus.

The doctor said the substance would not cause deformities.

A doctor checked the fetus April 7, and another appointment is scheduled for next week.

‘‘So far, everything is OK,’’ the mother said.

The mother said her daughter will continue her education.

‘‘She takes things in stride,’’ she said.

The mother said they met with the district attorney.

An uncle of the girl’s boyfriend said the family would not want to talk to the Mirror.

First of all, while reading these comments... most people here are just ******** about the sex. Honestly, it's human nature... it's going to happen, and it did. End of story there. As far as the boyfriend of this girl is concerned... I believe that he should be charged with attempted murder. It may seem a bit harsh to some, but what if this hormone kills the child, or the mother? The blame needs to be put on him. They both made the choice to have sex, therefore I feel that they should both be ready and willing to accept the consequences. It seems to be that she took responsibility, and he hasn't. For those who don't realize this... he's the boyfriend who just wants the girl who's easy, or who's been known to get around. He's also the guy who leaves his girlfriend with 5 kids and skips town. Basically he's a dead beat. What this girl saw or continues to see, I don't know.. but I hope she and the child are ok, and that she learns from this. As far as the boy, he'll get punished.

yeah of course she had to have had sex but it is the lack of responsibility of the father who tried to kill his unborn baby. Im 18 and im pregnant. Im very happy and so is the father. Therefore it is not about her age it is about the father who is trying to kill his unborn baby.

Drugs, sex, babies, educational inadequacies from lack of education, injuries and death caused by stupid accidents are all the RESULT of poor decisions! WHY WHY WHY must the taxcpayer bear these burdens whether the are made by young people or adults.

CHOICES: The Choices We Make Are The Choices Te Live With!

If we followed this principle instead of accepting the excuse of poor decisions a whole lot less por decisions would be made.

And for elle--we have NO IDEA what the consequences are. At our age, we can not see the depth of the consequences of actions like this. You may think you know, but you don't. Go find a single teenage mom (whose parents are not bearing the burden of her responsibility) who is living on her own and working crazy hours at minimum wage (because she couldn't obtain her degree with a baby), attempting to pay for babysitters, rent, food, etc. Live her life for one day--maybe then you will have just one glimpse of the consequences. And even if don't believe in God--have some respect for yourself and your future husband. Why are you wasting this now? We have so much life ahead of us! As a 19 year-old college student with a boyfriend for over 3 years--I am proud to say that we are waiting. I can appreciate him and his love (because true love waits) since we spend our time getting to know each other. He is my best friend and when we marry in 2 years, we will know that we are wholly each other's.

Yes, this article is about a very poor decision made by this young man. And he really should be punished for his actions. However, just like when you have a weed in your garden, if the only thing you do is clip off the top part, it is constantly going to come back. In situations like this, we need to reach down and pull out the root of the matter. Otherwise, there will be more horrible acts like this just occuring in different forms. And for ashm and SCHart--that is great that you were able to still make a life for yourself. But, don't forget the hardships you had to endure to get to where you are. I know-- I saw it through my mom. And she is our best encourager to obtain a college degree and then start a family, because she knows the difficulties. Why condone this behavior and cause someone else to experience what you did?

I myself am only 25 but I have made a great life for myself. I have my parents to thank for that! They were always there for me growing up. They taught me life lessons and values that parents don't do today! So before we go pointing the finger at 2 children, maybe we should look into the way they are raised! I little bit of discipline never hurt! That doesn't mean to beat your kid with a large stick either. All in all... parents need to take just as much responsibility as the guilty parties involved!

ok...I am a little new to all of this but I for one can read the story... So here is my input on all of this.....To the family...I hope that all is well and everything works out for the best! To the rest of the society on here...The issue is that an unborn child and a teens life were put at risk! So why all the sarcasm!!! SCHart...I must say that I agree with you 100%! The school has programs to teach our children about sex but like you said...we as adults and parents must take the extra step and be there to talk to our own children! As for the "father" of this unborn child.... I feel that he needs to be thrown into the clinker! Set him in a cell give him his 3 meals a day and let him think about what he has done.... there is no need for bodily harm...although a good kick to the rear end from his parents should be taken place. Kids this day and age aren't what use to be decades ago. (to be continued)....

Oh and by the way if you are trusting the school to raise your kids SHAME ON YOU.

Does anyone seem to care that this is about the unborn child. I totally agree ellejex. I was once a 18 year old mother now I am a 26 year old mother of 3. Who all by the way have the same father and we have been together for 11years. Having a child out of wedlock doesn't mean that you are a bad person or that you made a bad choice. People seem to forget that this poor girl and her unborn child are VICTIMS at this boys mind. She never asked for this he did this to her. And as far as the person who said sex is for married people like you have never done anything wrong. Don't be so judgemental against people you never meant. Oh and I too know I little thing about GOD and he believes in FORGIVENESS... It seems that alot of you people are tending to make judgements on a girl and her life but maybe you should be looking at your own lives.

WOW THIS WHOLE THING IS AMAZING. AS A 18 YEAR OLD I WOULD LOVE TO SAY THAT YOU GUYS ARE WRONG FOR THE MOST PART. SCHOOLS DO NOT TEACH SEX-ED WELL. HARDLY AT ALL. BESIDES KIDS MY AGE AND ESP YOUNGER DO NOT WANT TO TALK TO OUR TEACHERS ABOUT SEX. IT IS THE PARENTS RESPONSIBLITLY AND IN MY OPIONION SCHOOLS SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING ANYTHING ABOUT IT.THIS ARTICLE IS NOT ABOUT TEENS HAVING SEX. AND JUST BECASUE YOU ARE 18 OR A LITTLE YOUNGER HAVING SEX DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE. AND WHOEVER MADE THAT COMMENT ABOUT GOD. . . NOT EVERYONE BELIEVES IN GOD SUCH AS MY SELF. EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT VIEWS AND DIFFERENT OPINIONS. IF THE GIRL FEELS SHE IS RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO HAVE SEX AND RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF SEX THEN BY ALL MEANS. . HAVE SEX. WE ARE IN A SOCIETY THAT PEOPLE AS YOUNG AS 13 ARE HAVING SEX. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE MARRIED. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE OLDER THEN 18 OR 20. OR 25. GET REAL. I KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING . I AM 18. THIS IS ABOUT THE FATHER.

SCHart - You honestly think that schools are responsible for teaching kids about sex? You TRUST someone else teaching your child about sex and the implications of having it can have?

This is the biggest downfall of us as a society - depending on someone else, the schools and teachers, to raise your children.

Shame on you.

Maybe because he is from a rural area he knew about ProstaMate. Maybe that is how they got their sex education. Down on the farm. Besides it is an intramuscular injection drug. My defense would be it couldn't work as it should.

Well...We pay the school system to teach our children not to have sex, so you know as a 16 year old mom myself at one time (mind you she is now 16 herself)I think both as a parent of 3 girls and a teen mom that the education level can assist but as with all things we as parents are responsible for educating our own children. Honestly though we can advise them as much as we know and yes, I do wish I would have waited til marrige but I am 32 now and at 15 you were not right. We must remember that things do happen no matter how hard you try. My mom was and is a great mom. I guess I was just a typical teen right....Wrong teen mom yes...horrible person NO, many teen moms can and have made a great life for themselves, I know I have I have a well established career, I have traveled, I am a home owner...and just think I made bad choices as a teen WOW unheard of huh!

Wonder if the kids were home-schooled or had abstinence-only sex ed? Or maybe they got refused "protection" because they were too young. Whatever happened, the young man put both the mother and the unborn child at risk and deserves jail time.

Freeworld82; Yea but for us pregnancy meant going to visit an aunt and adoption into a family that could support a child. BUT welfare and social programs assure that these children can breed with impunity and someone will pay.

Sex has been a big part of every generation's teenage life. From the guys and girls who would get married at 15-16 or younger when this country started, to the bitty-boppers of the 50's, the hippies of the 70's, and now. If any of you older folks remember your first date, first kiss... you now it's all just the game leading up to the big finish of sex. As for safe sex issues, most parents today let the schools teach it and then get mad when a teacher shows the class a ******. You can't teach abstience only and then expect the teenagers to know what protection is availiable to them. But the story here is someone tried to kill an baby. That person should be punished to the upmost extreme of the law.
