They bounced and they bounced on their mats on the floor.

The students giggled and yelped for them to ask more.

They thought and they thought and came up with answers galore,

Until finally the fifth grade was crowned the victor!

Students at St. John’s Catholic School in Lakemont participated in an annual Dr. Seuss trivia game Friday in celebration of the 11th annual National Education Association’s Read Across America Day scheduled for Monday.

Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel was born March 2, 1904. He died Sept. 24, 1991.

The pre-kindergarten through seventh-grade students competed in teams divided by grade, with Dr. Seuss book characters serving as team mascots. Sneetches represented the winning fifth-graders.

Eighth-grade students kept score and asked the trivia questions.

Catherine Crevecoeur, 11, was part of the sixth-grade Fox in Socks team. She said her favorite part of the event is the student teamwork needed to answer questions.

“I like to read,” she said. “It sort of shows reading pays off.”

The winners receive free books at a book fair.

To prepare, students read Dr. Seuss books for three weeks prior to the event, and parents and state Sen. John H. Eichelberger Jr., R-Blair, read to the children, Principal Gary Evangelisto said.

“It’s an enjoyable way to promote reading,” said Linda Mueller, who teaches third and fourth grades. “They get very excited when it comes close to Dr. Seuss time.”

Other local schools also recognized the day reserved to celebrate reading.

Hollidaysburg Area School District Superintendent Paul Gallagher was a guest reader at Foot of Ten Elementary School, while Charles W. Longer and Frankstown elementary students will celebrate Monday with guest readers.
