Extending leaf collection helpful

The Altoona Mirror
It may cause some hassles for workers, but having leaf collection extended is a relief for city residents waiting for their trees to become bare.

Without the extension, residents would have had to arrange to get bags of leaves taken to a compost facility or find a way of storing them out of the weather until spring. Either would be a nuisance for most people.

After receiving requests, Altoona decided to make a last round of leaf collections the week of Dec. 3. The collection will follow the schedule for the previous weeks. The only leaf collection this week will be Thursday in the Pleasant Valley area to make up the missed collection on Thanksgiving Day.

Given the way the trees have been holding onto their leaves, extending leaf collection until the first week of December makes sense. That provides at least another week for leaves to fall and for residents to get them into bags.

The winds on Thanksgiving Day helped clear some trees, but the leaves of others still haven’t come down.

In most years, the leaves would be down, raked and hauled away by Thanksgiving. But warm temperatures in October delayed Mother Nature’s routine. All we can do is adjust our schedule to match.

And Altoona’s decision to conduct another round of leaf collection next week is a big help.
