Ethel P. Wyland, 89, Box 116, East Freedom RD 1, died Monday morning at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Chester and Verna (Clapper) Woomer. She married Arthur A. Wyland Feb. 11, 1937, in Altoona.
Surviving are her husband; eight children: Kay Biddle and husband, Bill, of Covington, Va., Kenneth Wyland and wife, Yvonne, of Pine Bush, N.Y., Gary Wyland of Roaring Spring, Janie Myers and husband, Don, of Roaring Spring, Matilda “Tick” Wyland of Roaring Spring, Sally Eicher and husband, Jim, of East Freedom, Jackie Wyland and wife, Bev, of East Freedom and Polly Hoover and husband, Dale, of Roaring Spring; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Edwards of Altoona; three brothers: Chester Woomer of McKee, Guy Woomer of McKee and Don Woomer of Scotch Valley; and a special niece, Nancy Shambaugh. She was preceded in death by a son, Theodore “Ted” Wyland, who died in 2004; and a brother, Lester Woomer.
She was a member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren. She had been employed at McKee Dental for many years and was a homemaker for her family. She was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School and a graduate of the Morrison Cove Business School.
Ethel enjoyed ceramics, candles and crafts. She was a member of the Altoona High School Alumni Association and Freedom-Greenfield Lioness Club.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren and 9 to the 10 a.m. services Thursday at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren by Pastor Larry Weaver and Brother Bill Biddle. Interment at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ethel’s memory may be given to the McKee Playground Association, c/o Robert Taylor, RR 1, Box 99, East Freedom, PA 16637.
