SHAWVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A chain-reaction crash involving an estimated 50 vehicles on an icy highway has closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in western Pennsylvania.
Marla Fannin, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, says the pileup near the Clearfield exit Wednesday morning involved several tractor-trailers and one gasoline tanker. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
Rain falling on still-frozen ground caused the icy conditions.
A 13-mile stretch between the Clearfield and Phillipsburg exits was closed. The eastbound lanes reopened about 10 a.m., and the westbound lanes were expected to later in the day.
Officials also closed a section of the highway about 50 miles farther east due to ice. One westbound lane between Lock Haven and Loganton reopened by midmorning, and the other lane was expected to open by 11 a.m.
