Drug bust nets 12

DA says alleged dealers ‘high level'

September 18, 2007
Jessica VanderKolk
The Blair County Drug Task Force arrested 12 alleged drug dealers in Altoona Monday after a several-month investigation.

District Attorney Richard Consiglio said he considers many of those arrested “high-level” dealers, although others might call them “mid-level” for buying drugs from people outside Altoona.

“They’re high-level for Blair County,” he said. “They have a connection with out-of-town drug dealers. Some bring drugs in from as far away as California.”

The arrests were completed without incident by 10 a.m. Monday and processed by Altoona police. District Justice Todd Kelly arraigned the offenders.

Drugs involved in the charges include cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin and pills, such as Xanax and Vicodin.

Ten of the 12 arrested are listed with Altoona addresses, with one from Philadelphia and one from Brooklyn, N.Y. Eight were released on bail from other drug arrests at the time of these most recent arrests.

Police conducted controlled drug purchases over several months prior to the arrests.

“Obviously, we want to put them away for as long as we can,” Consiglio said. He estimated they were involved with drugs worth thousands of dollars.

Consiglio said some of those arrested may have been involved in a network of drug dealers, and said police located everyone they planned to arrest in Monday’s raid.

“That’s not to say this won’t lead to further investigations, further arrests,” he said.
