The local walk is scheduled for Saturday and is a prelude to International Peace Day, Sept. 21. Walkers will meet at 10 a.m. at Shelco Seafood Co. on Scotch Valley Road, off Frankstown Road. Participants will walk a 3-mile route (on sidewalks) through Hollidaysburg. Opening and closing ceremonies will include entertainment. The event will last until approximately 1 p.m.
The walk is sponsored by The Peace Alliance, a nonprofit, nonpartisan citizen action organization spearheading the national campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace.
Proponents of the legislation hope to build on rapidly growing grassroots support to persuade lawmakers to create a U.S. Department of Peace.
“I invite everyone to accept this incredible challenge and opportunity set before us — a call for peace. There is no one way to peace; there are multiple paths, which often intersect, overlap or glance off each other. I would say that peace is the evolutionary challenge to humanity in this particular moment,’’ said Debra Sullivan of Altoona, co-leader of the Pennsylvania Ninth District.
