
It's good to cut back on the noise
PITTSBURGH — Enough already. That was the message from NBA commissioner David Stern about all the superfluous noise and glitz that afflicts NBA games.
The NBA started this trend, and now apparently wants to scale it back.
That’s good.
Teams call it ‘‘in-game entertainment’’ but the entertainment value of non-stop sonic clutter is up for debate.
Hockey was quick to adopt the NBA style, then it began to creep into baseball and football.
There’s good noise and bad noise.
A bad playing at a college football game? Good noise.
The umpteenth playing of ‘‘Wooly Bully’’ during a hockey stoppage? Bad noise.
Fans spontaneously chanting, ‘‘Here we go Steelers?’’ Good noise.
Ten seconds of some heavy metal favorite selected by a player for his plate appearance? Bad noise.
Its gone beyond what’s on the sound system.

Pirate fans need to root for Nady
PITTSBURGH — If you care about what happens to the Pittsburgh Pirates, you should be rooting for Xavier Nady to continue to do well, and maybe even make the All-Star team.
That would enhance his trade value.

PITTSBURGH —- Two things are certain about Matt Morris, the pitcher the Pirates released on Sunday:
He’s a fine guy.
He’s a lousy pitcher.
Pirates’ attendance not a worry
PITTSBURGH — Shades of the 1970s (and ’80s and ’90s), attendance for Pittsburgh Pirates games was a headline issue last week.
The alarms apparently went off when Monday’s home date with the Florida Marlins sold only 8,444 tickets.
