
Allegheny to provide stiff test
If you are looking around for that voodoo doll of Altoona Area High School athletic director Vince Nedimyer hidden somewhere in football coach Phil Riccio’s office, don’t bother. The move that got WPIAL powerhouse North Allegheny as a lead-in to the youthful Mountain Lions’ already rugged Mid-Penn Conference schedule was orchestrated by Riccio himself. ‘‘It’s self-inflicted,’’ Riccio said. ‘‘We’ll find out really fast how good we are.’’ Kickoff tonight at Mansion Park is slated for 8 p.m. North Allegheny finished 11-1 last year, losing to Gateway by a point in the WPIAL (District 7) semifinals. Riccio said the two-year, home-and-home contract with North Allegheny was a result of having a hard-to-fill open date in the first week of the season. Riccio said the Lions’ other options included Parkland and St. Joseph Prep, which are every bit as highly-touted as is NA, if not more so. Riccio’s familiarity and friendship with Art Walker Jr.
