Glendale’s Mazenko steps away from coaching
Gregg Mazenko never got to make that trip to interdistricts he so desperately wanted. He never got to put the Moshannon Valley League, Juniata Valley League or District 6 championships in the trophy case as he would have liked, either.
Sometimes there are just more important things a person needs take stock of.
‘‘My wife [Marci] and I are talking the one night, and she mentions that [my daughter] Saige is going to be 7. I thought ‘Holy cow, she’s going to be 7,’’’ Mazenko said. ‘‘’I’ve been coaching her whole life.’’’
And with that realization, the wheels began to turn, eventually leading Mazenko, a former Altoona Mirror boys basketball coach of the year, to step away from coaching at Glendale High School in the prime of his career just as one of the program’s most potentially gifted groups of players was on its way into his hands.
Mazenko tendered his resignation last week.
