Music in the Mountains!

The Cresson Sportsmen’s Club will be a busy place this weekend, with two benefit concert events on two consecutive days.

The second annual Pickin’ for Wishes bluegrass benefit concert will take place on Saturday at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club, raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation of Western PA. Starting at noon, Pickin’ for Wishes will feature a full day’s slate of local and regional bluegrass bands. Performing this year will be The Roustabouts, Mac Martin & the Dixie Travelers, The Hillbilly Gypsies (performing two sets), Mama Corn, Brush Creek and the Allegheny Drifters. Food and refreshments, prizes, arts and crafts vendors and children’s activities will be available. Tickets are $10 advance and $15 at the gate, and children ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.

The following day, Sunday, the 23rd annual Kids Come First Benefit; End Of Summer Jam with bring a variety of rock, blues, country and acoustic sounds to the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club stage, with proceeds helping out Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. That event kicks off at 1 p.m., and will feature music from a variety of performers. Bands and performers taking part in this year’s Kids Come First Benefit include The Backyard Rockers, Rokkandy, Mahoney B & the Blacksnakes, Cottonmouth, The Jive Turkeys, Flying Blind, Emberstitch, Mo Yon, Ron Russell and Disorganized Crime. Donation at the gate is $10 per person, with children ages 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. Food and refreshments plus prize giveaways will be available.

Indoors this weekend, New York City-based Kiss tribute band Kiss Alive! NYC will perform at 30 Something on Friday night. Formed ten years ago, Kiss Alive! NYC will bring the excitement and theatrics of Kiss’ music and stage show to the 30 Something stage. Local progressive rockers Skye 2.0 will open. The show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10/advance, and $13/door.

And 1980s-era hair-band rockers Faster Pussycat will visit Ace’s Lounge in Johnstown on Tuesday night, in a concert presented by Placid Promotions. Formed in Los Angeles in 1986, Faster Pussycat became one of the popular glam-rock attractions of the late 1980s and early 1990s, scoring video and radio hits with the songs “Bathroom Wall” and “House of Pain.” Opening for them at Ace’s will be the bands Blood Union, One Adam 12, 13 Stories and Fail. The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20/advance and $25/door.
