Danielle Ate the Sandwich in Hollidaysburg!

June 13, 2014 - Jim Price
The word on the streets of Hollidaysburg in the next few days may involve talk about somebody named Danielle who ate a sandwich. Unless somebody named Danielle actually did eat a sandwich in a manner that warrants such discussion, the topic probably won’t be about sandwich cuisine, but about music.

Originally from Colorado, Danielle Anderson is an indie folk singer, songwriter, guitarist and ukulele performer; and performing under the stage name Danielle Ate the Sandwich, she is one of the rising names in the world of ukulele, and was featured on the cover of the Fall 2013 edition of “Ukulele” Magazine. She has recorded four independent music albums, her YouTube videos have been viewed by millions, and she has toured nationally, sharing stages with such performers as Mumford & Sons and Leo Kottke. Danielle Ate the Sandwich comes to Hollidaysburg to perform on Tuesday evening at Allegheny Creamery and Crepes. The Allegheny Bilge Rats Shanty Choir will open the show, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person. Allegheny Creamery and Crepes is located at 505 Allegheny Street in Hollidaysburg. The show is being presented by the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective.

Outdoor music will continue across the region. Inclement weather notwithstanding, Saving Jake will kick off downtown Altoona’s Summer Sounds Concert Series on Friday evening at Heritage Plaza beginning at 7 p.m.; admission is free.

The Patton Fire Company will present their sixth annual Fireman’s Jubilee event on Friday, Saturday and Sunday along Magee Avenue in Patton borough. Events will include children’s activities, the “Battle of the Barrel” competition on Saturday, a classic car show on Sunday, and live bands. Nobody’s Heroes performs rebel Americana sounds on Friday evening, and Driving Sideways plays classic and modern rock on Saturday night. Music begins at 9 p.m. both evenings, and admission is free.

Several Bedford area musicians will provide the entertainment during Bedford’s first Chicken Wing Square-Off, taking place from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday on the Square in downtown Bedford. Several local eateries will serve up chicken wings of different flavors, and visitors can vote on their favorite wings. The cost will be $1 per wing or a dozen wings for $10.

And the Blair County Community Action Agency kicks off their “Summer in the City” concert season on Wednesday evening, when Felix and the Hurricanes – fresh from a one-week performing vacation tour in North Carolina’s Outer Banks – will perform at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

As always, readers are encouraged to support the wide variety of musical talent gracing area stages every week, and help ensure that such music continues to happen. And if alcohol is involved while enjoying the music, please drink responsibly, get a designated driver or call a cab.
