Pub Crawlers, Devils, Ukes and Drums!

April 11, 2014 - Jim Price
With the circus in town during this weekend and upcoming week, an appropriate circus of various bands and events punctuates the area’s live music scene as well.

D.D. and the Pub Crawlers launch the weekend under the big top of the Belmar Hotel Friday evening beginning at 6. This group brings a full four-piece horn section and frequently welcomes guests onstage to assist with their vibrant performance of rock, funk, blues, ska, reggae and more. The group will introduce several new songs during this performance. Those planning to attend are advised to reserve their tables at the Belmar for this dinner hour performance, as attendance is usually heavy for this show and available tables will go fast.

Devilishly heavy metal will grace the stage at McGarvey’s (formerly Aldo’s) on Saturday night, as Johnstown-based heavy-rocking specialists 10 Million Devils will headline a three-band bill starting at 10:30 p.m. Featuring three-quarters of former Johnstown metal rockers The Embalmed, 10 Million Devils will showcase their brutal brand of heavy music, topped by the feral vocal delivery of Jason Straw. Opening the show will be Johnstown-based Irish punk rockers Lucky Lad Green and Altoona-based metalcore group Wreathbearer.

Pellegrine’s will host an all-ages musical circus on Saturday evening, with a wide variety of flavors taking the stage. Several performers from the PennSOULvania soul and hip-hop community will perform, including D-Rad, Chucc Deuce, Money Gang, DuVille and Chet Denny. Acoustic indie/alternative performer Kevo Can’t Dance and State College punk rock favorites The Whatleys will close out the show, which begins at 7 p.m.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective will stage their monthly Second Sunday Ukulele Jam on a Saturday this month. Ukulele enthusiasts are invited to converge at Penn State Altoona’s Slep Center on Saturday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. The first half-hour of the jam is geared toward ukulele beginners to teach proper strumming techniques and basic chords, and the assembled musicians will then jam on a series of common tunes for the remainder of the jam. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted to help with costs. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

And the Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble will present its spring concert on Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the JFK Student Lounge on the university’s Loretto campus. Directed by Saint Francis music instructor and former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan, the Ensemble will perform a variety of hand drum-based music from around the world, including western African, Brazilian and native American drum songs. The performance will include guest appearances by Becky Bickford and Johnstown-based Kulani West African Dance Group. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome to attend.

Support live music every weekend! And if you plan to celebrate while enjoying live music, please designate a driver or call a cab!
