Wearing Green with the Live Music Scene

March 15, 2014 - Jim Price
Another St. Patrick’s Day weekend has arrived, and that means plenty of celebrations centered around shamrocks, green attire, leprechauns, corned beef and cabbage, green-colored beverages and snacks, products named Guinness and Jameson, kilts, and Irish-themed bands and music.

Friday evening starts off with one of the most popular St. Patrick’s-themed celebrations every year, Mac’s Irish Bash at the Jaffa Shrine. The annual fundraiser for the Richard L. McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund starts at 6 p.m., and features music from the Michael O’Brian Band and Flight 19. Tickets for the event are sold out.

Two benefit events happen Friday evening to help victims of the recent February 27 building fire in Hollidaysburg. The “Help Hollidaysburg” fundraisers takes place at Pellegrine’s, with live band entertainment starting at 7 p.m. Groups donating their talents include The Dashing Saboteurs, Wreathbearer, Klockwick, Emberstitch and New Trick. There will also be gift basket, door prize and other giveaways. Donation at the door is $5 per person.

And the Allegheny Bilge Rats Shanty Choir will also raise funds to help the February 27 fire victims when they perform pirate odes and sea shanty favorites at the Allegheny Street Coffee Company on the Diamond in downtown Hollidaysburg starting at 7 p.m. Cash and other donations will be accepted for the fire victims during the performance.

Numerous St. Patrick’s-themed dances, shows and parties will happen throughout the area on Saturday night, including the popular 814 Riot at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub. Billed as “The Last, Last 814 Riot,” this year’s throwdown of punk and roots rock starts at 8 p.m., and will feature performances by Ben Dumm, Grand Piano, Barons, Nobody’s Heroes and The Whatleys. Admission is $5.

Sunday and Monday, St. Patrick’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day, will both contain their share of Irish-themed live musical merriment. Zach’s and Molly Maguire’s will feature music both days. Zach’s will present the Michael O’Brian Band and Full Kilt on Sunday afternoon and evening, and Matt Pletcher on Monday night. Molly Maguire’s will feature the Myers Brothers and Jen Bertiaux on Sunday, and Rich Edmundson and Born & the Beanstalk on Monday. Meanwhile, Pellegrine’s will feature Triple Threat and Rock & Roll Gypsies for their St. Patrick’s party Monday night.

And the Oriental Ballroom in Gallitzin will become a sea of green on Monday evening when it hosts the annual St. Patrick’s Day Party starting at 5:30 p.m. Full Kilt, the Michael O’Brian Band and Hot Wax will provide the music, and dinner will also be served. This event usually sells out this year, and available tickets are reportedly in short supply. The event is sponsored by the Gallitzin Fire Company, and proceeds benefit the fire company and the Gallitzin American Legion.

Support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while wearing the green this year, please designate a driver or call a cab!
