Enjoy the Heat Wave!
February 21, 2014 - Jim Price
Old Man Winter finally gives central PA a break this weekend, with daytime temperatures in the 40s to melt off much of the snow that has fallen in recent weeks. This provides the perfect opportunity to purge your cabin fever by taking in some live music on the area stages.
Several area favorites are in action this weekend. Shallow Nine returns to the Belmar Hotel on Saturday night. Singer Erika Marino’s powerhouse voice and presence should help inspire immediate dance floor action as this group performs a wide variety of favorites and hits. The show starts at 10 p.m., no cover.
For fans of the punk-rocking arts, McGarvey’s (formerly Aldo’s) is the place to be both Friday and Saturday night. Clearfield punk favorites Revenge Memorial return on Friday night, with special guests Xs for Eyes. Xs for Eyes returns on Saturday night as part of a triple bill with State College punk favorites The Whatleys and Pittsburgh-based quintet The Filthy Low Down.
Pellegrine’s takes care of the all-ages audiences this weekend with shows both on Friday night and Saturday. Friday’s bill gets under way at 8 p.m. and features Altoona-based foursome New Trick, Connecticut’s On A Piranha, and solo performers Max Prussner and Leo Lydon. Pellegrine’s then hosts the hardcore throwdown Brick by Brick II Saturday afternoon starting at 3 p.m., featuring a lengthy list of area and traveling hardcore bands. Doors open at 2 p.m.
Felix & the Hurricanes perform a special benefit show on Tuesday evening at the Altoona Area High School auditorium. Proceeds help the Altoona Area Education Association (AAEA). The show begins at 6 p.m., and all ages are welcome. Donation is $1 or a canned good at the door.
And if you are up for a roadtrip and want to learn about the current state of the music industry, the 18th annual Millennium Music Conference happens in Harrisburg this Friday and Saturday. The daytime music business conference, featuring a variety of panels, seminars, a trade show, speakers and an acoustic stage, takes place at the Best Western Premier Central Hotel & Convention Center. Evening performance showcases featuring nearly 250 different bands and performers from Pennsylvania and across the country will take place at venues throughout the Harrisburg area. (Altoona's Mama Corn performs Friday night at the Brewhouse Grill in Camp Hill.) If you attend, you might even spot an Altoona Mirror blogger checking out the action!
Support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
