Mishler Bands Together Again...
January 10, 2014 - Jim Price
For the second year in a row, an assortment of area musical talent will converge upon the stage of Altoona’s historic Mishler Theatre to entertain an audience and raise monies for charity.
The second annual Mishler Bands Together for Charity event will start at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, as a variety of musical entertainment will grace the theatre stage to raise funds for Family Services, Inc. and the Mishler. Performing this year will be Pure Cane Sugar, Tommy Wareham, Tyne and the Fastlyne, Born and the Beanstalk, the Backyard Rockers, Your Dad's Friends, Ground Crew, Root and the Fifths, Vic Rizzo & John McKelvey, Pat McGinnis, Last Stand, Steve Summerhill and Mama Corn. Advance tickets are available for $28, which includes a box office handling fee. Tickets can be purchased at the Mishler box office or via the website www.mishlertheatre.org.
Also on Saturday night, Maryland-based heavy rock trio Cavern will headline an all-ages, four-band bill at Pellegrine’s. Formed two years ago, the Grimoire Records recording group performs a brand of progressive-leaning, heavy metal informed by flavors of classic Black Sabbath, Black Label Society and even ‘70s-era King Crimson. The group will be performing material from their eponymous debut recording from last year, as well as newer material. Sharing the bill with Cavern will be Altoona-based improvisational heavy rockers Black Sun, local socio-political hardcore rockers Surrounded By Ignorance, and Tyrone-based punk rockers G.G. & the Assassins.
Later on Saturday evening, McGarvey’s Bar & Grill (formerly Aldo’s) will host a reunion of Altoona-based heavy modern rockers This Calling after a two-year absence. Featuring singer/guitarist Joe Neary, guitarist Chris Silva, bassist Paul Greiner and drummer Justin Fair, This Calling will perform songs from their 2010 album “Witness the Fall” and tracks from their unreleased EP. Ganister, also featuring Silva, will also perform.
And Penn State Altoona’s Titelman Lounge will come alive with the sound of ukuleles on Sunday afternoon with the premiere of the Second Sunday Ukulele Jam, which will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Ukers are welcome to participate, and may either bring their own instrument or borrow one of many being supplied during the event. Participants will jam on common songs together and learn picking and strumming techniques along the way. Admission to the event is free, but donations will be accepted to cover costs. The Ukulele Jam is presented by the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective, who will present ukulele jams on second Sunday afternoons. The group also plans a bigger ukulele-themed event, the Ukulele Soiree and Uke Petting Zoo, on Sunday afternoon, February 2, also in the Misciagna Building on the Penn State Altoona campus.
If you plan to celebrate this weekend, drink responsibly and/or designate a driver. And bundle up!
Support live music this weekend and upcoming week, and resolve to support area music in 2014!
