Bring On 2014!
December 27, 2013 - Jim Price
The end of the year often provides lots of live music events, and such is the case as this weekend and upcoming week as the page turns from 2013 to 2014. Several noteworthy shows punctuate the live music slate over the next several days.
At least two local musician homecomings happen on Saturday. Now calling Nashville her home base, Roaring Spring native Angela Dodson returns to perform at Glenn’s Place. Backed by a band, Dodson will perform songs from her debut CD, “Lonesome Time.” Dodson’s style is traditional country and rockabilly, rooted in the classic sounds of Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Johnny & June Carter Cash. The show begins at 9 p.m., and admission is $5 per person.
Also back in the area this weekend is Altoona native Jimmy Mowery, who cut his teeth on the area all-ages circuit while a member of the band Like A Movie and other groups. Now calling Myrtle Beach, South Carolina his home base, Mowery is in the process of issuing his latest EP. Although the EP is not yet available, Mowery will be performing songs from the disc as part of an all ages bill on Saturday evening at the Archway Center in Altoona. Other performers on the bill include Pittsburgh’s The Composure, The Big Time, On The Run and Westpoint Saints. This show begins at 5 p.m.
As is usually the case, New Year’s Eve, Tuesday night, will be busy with several live music events to ring in 2014. The big show in the Altoona area will be the four-band blast at the Ramada, with Felix & the Hurricanes, Locked and Loaded, Shallow Nine and kBand entertaining throughout the Ramada complex beginning at 9:30 p.m.. Visitors can move about and check out each band during the course of the night. The admission of $25 per person includes the entertainment, party favors, hot dogs and sauerkraut plus champagne toast at midnight. Hotel room packages are available as well.
Of course, if you plan on doing any heavy-duty celebrating this New Year’s holiday weekend, please designate a driver or call a cab. The “Take A Cab, We’ll Pay the Tab” program will again be in effect from 10 p.m. Tuesday night until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning. Those who have had too much to drink may call 947-6805 for a free cab ride home during that time period. This service is sponsored by Edgar Snyder & Associates, WTAJ-TV and Pyramid Healthcare, Inc..
Support live music this weekend and upcoming week, and resolve to support area music in 2014!
