Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree

December 20, 2013 - Jim Price
For those who need to unwind in between last-minute Christmas shopping, tree-trimming and other preparations, the area music scene will be rocking around the Christmas tree with several noteworthy shows during this weekend and upcoming week.

For some jumping dinner-hour music, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers bring their spirited brass-flavored rock, blues and ska to the Belmar Hotel Friday evening starting at 6 p.m., before heading across town to entertain members and guests at the Heidelberg Country Club starting at 9 p.m.

Aldo’s (soon to be McGarvey’s Bar & Grille) will present a four-band hard-rocking bash on Saturday night, headlined by Lies, Inc. Also on the bill will be area heavy rockers NailDriver and Klockwick; and from northeastern PA, the Altoona area debut of Sucker. Sucker features lead singer and bassist Candi Vee, who may be familiar to area music fans as a former member of the bands Threeway and My Friend Frankie. Sucker is Candi’s original music modern rock project.

Several area favorites will be throwing their own parties on area stages Saturday night as well. Flight 19 will be playing at the 4D’s Lounge, one of their last shows before taking a brief hiatus through January and February. Nobody’s Heroes will bring their rip-roaring brand of punk-infused folk and Americana to Family Pizza & Pub, and singer Erika Marino and Shallow Nine will trigger good times at the Belmar Hotel.

After Christmas, Altoona native and former Like A Movie singer/guitarist Jimmy Mowery returns to the area Thursday night for a CD-release party at The Island. Now based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mowery recorded his new EP in September with Grammy-nominated producer Mack Damon, and will have copies available for purchase at the show.

With a wintry weather forecast for Saturday, music fans may wish to call area venues ahead of time to make sure shows are still taking place. Support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
