November 21, 2013 - John Mehno
Everyone who was around on Nov. 22, 1963 has a story.
I'll be brief: I was in fourth grade and we were on the playground for late afternoon recess when the news broke. When we got back in the building, you could see from the faces of the adults that this was catastrophic. The world stood still. Radio and TV went to wall-to-wall coverage that lasted through Monday.
What I don't remember is how we got back to normal. When was it OK to laugh at silly TV shows again? When did radio get back to the Top 40? That's all a blur. My next strong memory is early 1964, when the Beatles hit.
Maybe the most amazing thing about this is that 50 years later, we're still not certain about what happened on that awful day.
I thought I'd never have as big a shock again, but 9/11 matched it. That's a different story, though.
